Emo jumps the shark?

I know what you are thinking….emo jumped the shark a long long time ago boy…or, what’s EMO….well, to both I say exactly BUT just in case there was a little life boy band Good Charlotte went out and found the biggest baddest muthafuckin’ shark in the ocean and went 100% Fonzie on that bitch with this track. Bet it goes straight to number 1 on the urban charts.

New Beck cd leaks

Okay; admittedly I am not the biggest Beck fan in Tampa.  Hell, I am probably not even the biggest Beck fan in my neighborhood and if we are gonna continue down this road it is probably a stretch to call me a Beck fan at all.  I do not own any of his cds and the only album I am particularly fond of is “Sea Change“, his least Beck album to date.  That said, if you are bumping Beck in your car and I hopped in I would not be disgruntled…I am firmly in the take him or leave him boat I suppose.  I will say that a couple of seasons ago I saw him on Austin City Limits w/the Flaming Lips as his band and I thought that was freaking awesome and I have looked forward to seeing him live the next time he comes through the Tampa area ever since.  A couple of months ago I saw an article where Beck mentioned his new cd was gonna be a hip-hop cd. Well, this peaked my interests to say the least…I figured one of 2 things…complete train wreck trash *or* it could have a Buck 65 type sound and kill.  Well, the cd leaked and while a “hip-hop record” it is not it does have its moments and I am glad to say that outside of “1000 bpm” there are no complete trainwrecks.  The “non hip-hop” tracks are standard Beck fare and, to be honest, are pretty good.  The new cd comes out October 3.

Beck – Cellphone’s Dead
Beck – Dark Star

Buck 65 – Wicked and Weird

Footnote: Beck has also announced details of a 10-year anniversary reissue of 1996’s ‘Odelay’, which will feature rarities and remixes by Aphex Twin and Dust Brothers (warning: this link causes siezures). The reissue will also include B-sides and ‘Deadweight’, which was included on the soundtrack to the 1997 film ‘A Life Less Ordinary

Basking in Sunn O)))

Someone clued me in on the existence of Sunn O))) recently, and since then they were brought up in conversation by someone completely unrelated to the first person. Certainly such coincidence communicates a need to check them out for myself. So I did, and because I like what I heard I suggest you do too.

The sound of Sunn O))) varies a lot depending on who they collaborate with, but generally you can expect down-tempo, chill soundscapes behind moody instrumentation and sometimes abstract vocals. The selection I chose is slightly more energetic than most of the others, but if you find yourself dancing to it, you’ve either managed to play it at the wrong tempo or you could probably stand to sober up a bit.

Sunn O))) & Boris – Akuma No Kuma

Also, just to be clear, this is Sunn O))) the band:

Not to be confused with Sunn O))) amplifiers and so forth:

Okay? Good, then.

Three Six Mafia get a reality show

source

The show, dubbed Adventures in Hollyhood, is described by the music net as a comedy reality series, meaning viewers who tune in will presumably be laughing with the rappers, not at them (sorry, Newlyweds).

MTV has given the go-ahead for eight half-hour episodes, each of which will chronicle the daily goings-on of the group’s two main emcees, Juicy J and DJ Paul, as they attempt to parlay their Oscar win into lasting Hollywood fame.

The hip-hopsters will relocate, entourage and all, from their Memphis home base to Los Angeles over the course of the show and try their best to become Tinseltown players.

So, while winning an Academy Award will get you from Memphis to LA it can not get you a descent web site.  Three Six’s new cd is set to drop in December.

ROY BERRY IS YOUR HERO

This Tuesday, September 26, my heroes of Memphis, Lucero, will release their newest effort “Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers“.  The cd has been available for months as a digital download to those that were willing to pony up the money….this also made it widely available via all of the p2p networks…so to make a short story long the cd has been in the wild for months.  The promise of a free tshirt got me, a notrious downloader, to shell out the money for the the cd….well, that and the massive amount of love I have for these guys.  I was going to write a real review of the cd but every time I start one I can only write “fucking great. the end” and really, that is not much of a review.

Will this finally be the album that breaks the band?  That is what I think everytime I hear the cd. Will this finally be the cd that gets them in every dive bar jukebox around?  A few years ago we were watching these fellas in half-empty venues and now they are finding themselves having to play in midsize venues just to accomodate their growing fans.  If you have never seen them live they are a get drunk, raise your beer and sing a long type of band.  Sad songs about drunken nights, fist fights, broken hearts and bad tattoos sung to a back beat of pure, true-to-life rock and roll.

Fucking great.  You owe it to yourself to check these guys out and through the power of the internets you can do it now by preordering the cd.

basement-lo-fi-blues-rock monsters come to the majors

The new Black Keys album, Magic Potion, went on sale recently. If you liked the other Keys albums…you will like this one. If you are sitting there asking yourself….”self, who are these black keys and do i like them”….if that is you the answer is “SHUT THE FUCK UP AND EAT YOUR TACO!”….are you asking what does tacos and the black keys have in common? nothing…the taco line is gonna be the catch phrase for the taco stand me and the wench are gonna open….it will be named Taco Mildred and you will fiend for the Double Decker Dirty Nirny. trust me….till we get the capital up you listen to these 3 tracks and rock out with 2 crackers from Akron.

Your Touch

Goodbye Babylon

Meet Me in the City

Interesting factoid: They named the band from inspiration of a schizophrenic artist friend in Akron, who used the term “black keys” to describe things he disliked or people he did not trust. (source: mokb)

Not so interesting but more useful factiod: The last track comes from the EP of Junior Kimbrough covers entitled “Chulahoma“. Chulahoma was their final release for Fat Possum Records.

Ready, Set…..GO!

Well, here it is….today is the first post of the rest of your blog and all of that good shit. For the past 2 weeks I have been trying to think of what super-extra-special-awesome post I was gonna make for the first post ever but now…as I sit here typing in WordPress as opposed to working I just can not be bothered and I think this post has already gone on longer than it should have.

So….here is ninebullets.net….It will be an mp3 blog and hopefully it will have other (read: more talented) writers join the fray in the coming weeks. The name ninebullets comes from a song by The Drive-By Truckers….the greatest current rock and roll band in America. The song is Nine Bullets (duh)….and that’s it. Mad thanks to Trevor Bramble for helping me get this up and running…and by helping I mean he did it all while I complained.

Stay tuned.
