I was checking out the fantastic blog, HearYa this morning and they’ve started a new feature about cover songs that are better than the original and the most recent one features Jason covering Patterson’s song, The Assassin, from his solo album, Killers and Stars. Like HearYa, The Assassin, has always been my favorite track from the album and hearing Jason’s electric version of it makes it even better.

Maybe Jason will cover it on his next album…That! Would be awesome.

As y’all know, I try and preach the gospel of Scott H. Biram as often as possible. Today I stumbled across an interview he did for the upcoming documentary, Running Heavy and decided to do a little Dirty Old One Man Band youtube post. Enjoy:

This track was produced by Kno and features Deacon The Villain and Natti on the mic. Matt Hobbs of VitalFilms.net took the directors seat giving us an insider’s tour of Lexington, Kentucky (My mouth watered when they showed the barrels of Woodford Reserve). It took 4 albums to get a proper video from the CL camp but they did themselves proud. Check it out:

I’ve been a fan of Penny Arcade since its inception, and the evolution of the thing has been amazing to watch. Two snarky guys with a real talent for humor started with a casual webcomic that has now become a staple of the genre. Now they have an undeniably successful annual charity for kids in hospitals at Christmas (plus related black-tie event) and a series of the most massive and popular gaming conventions ever, the Penny Arcade Expos.

PAX ‘07 just wrapped up and while I was again unable to attend, they’ve provided a bevy of second-hand tales and media to sort through and enjoy. Normally I wouldn’t post any of that here, but there’s this one bit… it’s a guy singing and playing an acoustic guitar and I figure that’s the best sheep costume I’ll ever find.

So here you are go. Jonathan Coulton’s “Re:Your Brains”. Enjoy. With some fava beans and a nice chianti, if you like.

(It’s about the Xbox game Dead Rising, I think.)

At the 35 second mark of track one, aptly titled “HellYeah”, I knew I was gonna like this CD…

Hellyeah is basically a metal ’supergroup,’ featuring members of Pantera, Damageplan, Mudvayne and Nothingface. Drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott and bassist Bob Zilla of Pantera and Damageplan, vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett from Mudvayne, and guitarist Tom Maxwell of Nothingface. This is my kind of metal. Most of the new metal just doesn’t do it for me, it’s either too growly, too screamy or just too something. One of my friends who loves all that shit says the problem is that I’m just too old. That very well could be the case. Maybe the only metal I’m gonna like anymore is the metal that has the feel of the stuff I came up on, but I’m comfortable with that. Whatever it is that I like, Hellyeah has it in spades. Big drums, thick guitars, and grooves that get a hold of your ass and don’t wanna let go. This is ‘95mph on the interstate at 3am with the windows down and the volume cranked to 11′ music. To quote Borat, “I Like”.

No music mention of the to words “Hell Yeah” in that order would be complete without at least a nod to the mighty Bloodhound Gang and their song of that title…..Bloodhound Gang - Hell Yeah….now this post can be completed.

But wait, there’s more. Since you acted today I will included this bizarre fan made music video…Numa Numa it’s not:

Do any of you remember Friday Night Videos? That’s where this tale begins. I was spending the night at my grandmothers one night watching Friday Night Videos with my aunt when “What I Am” by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians came on.

I was in love.

Oh yeah, I also really dug the song but this 14 year old was totally into Mrs. Brickell. One of the super cool things about staying at my grandparents house was that they had a VCR and anytime I was there I was taping music videos so I had the song preserved in all it’s SLP glory to play….over and over and over and over and over….and I did. For a couple of months there Edie Brickell was the only woman for me. It took a while but I eventually got the “Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars” cassette but I never really got into it. Time passed and my taste in women grew sleazier as my awareness of sex increased and my infatuation for Edie passed.

I did not hear anything else of hers until I got Windows95 and the video, Good Times, from her solo debut, Perfect Picture Morning was included on the disc. I really liked the track and decided to pick up the disc. I liked Perfect Picture Morning much more than the material I had heard before and still listen to the cd from time to time. It was also at that time I learned that she had married Al Paul Simon. I had to deal with a few demons from my youth and come to some degree of closure regarding our brief but torrid love affair but I came through.

Last year Edie & the New Bohemians released the cd Stranger Things and to be honest, it was pretty boring. Nothing on it was the awesomeness of What I Am. Edie is scheduled to release a new solo cd later this year. For better or worse I’ll be checking it out.

Who the fuck is Emma Bunton? I dunno either but she did a cover of What I Am that has left me wondering why she bothered:
