TGIF indeed! Tonight the Drive-By Truckers make their triumphant return to Saint Petersburg and they are brining fellow Alabamians, The Dexateens along with them. If you live in the bay area there is no good excuse for not being at the rock show. If you’re thinking it feels like forever since the Truckers were in town you’re correct. This marks their first show in town since Jason left the band. Speaking of which, Jason will be playing The Crowbar in Ybor in 2 weeks.

I’m hyped as you might expect considering I named this site after a DBT song. I got a liter of Jim Beam at the house and a 12 pack of Ginger Ale to make it go down smoother. People are coming over around six and the party will commence. There may or may not be a Rock Report…I’m going as a fan first, music blogger second.

I’ve been jamming the complete DBT & Dexateens discographys on shuffle all day. Here are some select tracks to warm y’all up as well:

The Dexateens - Red Dust Rising
The Dexateens - Take Me To The Speedway

The Drive-By Truckers - Nine Bullets
The Drive-By Truckers - Sink Hole
The Drive-By Truckers - Where the Devil Don’t Stay
The Drive-By Truckers - Women Without Whiskey
The Drive-By Truckers - Daddy’s Cup
The Drive-By Truckers - Daddy Needs A Drink

There is no excuse for staying in the house this weekend people. There is just too damn much going on in our fine city this weekend and the weather is, all things considered, gonna be pretty mild. So, let’s get down to the haps…

Thursday Night

Some of the people involved with Reax have started booking shows on Thursday nights at Push Ultra Lounge in Downtown St. Pete. This Thursday night Summerbirds in the Cellar are gracing us with their presence. I’ve written about both of their cds here and here. Doors are at 8:00 and the cover is 6 dollars for singles and 10 dollars for couples. I’ve seen these guys live once before and it was tremendous.

Summerbirds in the Cellar - Wicked World (Move Softly)

Friday Night

It’s the return of one of the best shows I saw last year and the Florigasm will be returning sans the opressive summer heat. Nervous Turkey will be pulling the opening duties for JJ Grey and Mofro once again @ Skipper’s Smokehouse in a two night stand. I listed this one on Friday night because that is the night I plan to go but they will be performing both Friday and Saturday nights. This will be as much event as it is show and you should try everything in your power to see these guys one or both of the nights.

Nervous Turkey - Strang
JJ Grey and Mofro - Florida

Saturday Night

ninebullets.net faves Lucero are making their triumphant return to Saint Petersburg. Oh yeah, all the cool kids will be at The State Theater. There are shows where you just know that heavy heavy intoxication will accompany to and through the show. This is one such occasion. I have cleared my Sunday schedule. Everything is set to tear shit up on a Saturday night. Come and join us. These two songs should set the scene:

Lucero - Old Sad Songs
Lucero - I’ll Just Fall

Sunday Night

detox.

I have no idea why this show flew so far under the radar and I have no idea what (or really where) the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa is but I do know this:

This Friday night (as in 2 days away) Sara Lee Guthrie (daughter of Arlo, grandaughter of Woodie) and Johnny Irion are playing there. Doors are at 8:00 and the ticket price is $15.00 at the door.I about swallowed my tongue when I saw this listing pop up on TampaShows.net today and can saw I am genuinely excited about this one. Hope to see some of y’all there…

Who: Legendary ShackShakers
Where: Orpheum
When: Sunday, November 18

Damn it man. This show is exactly what the doctor ordered for your ol’ Autopsy IV. I work in the engineering field and over the past two weeks I have been under the gun and haven’t even had time for lunch or dinner much less blogging. Hence the sporatic posting around here. Well, the wave finally broke yesterday, life has calmed down and I am in the mood to blow off some steam. So, put on your special underwear, bring your drinkers stomach and let’s have a little fun. Because:

Those Legendary Shack*Shakers are coming to town! Snot rockets will be launched, pubes will be thrown, beers will be drank and howdy’s will get doodied. You may hate the music but you’ll love the show and I guarantee it. Jello Biafra called the good Colonel J.D. Wilkes “the last great rock and roll front man” and I ain’t yet to see someone prove him wrong. It’s Iggy Pop fronting Southern Culture on the Skids….the southern gothic, rock and roll version of the Sex Pistols but with more talent…

From my review of their last show here in town:

Look, have you ever tried to tell someone a really funny story and when you were finished they just looked at you, so you drop the “you had to be there” gimmick? That’s what trying to explain a Shackshaker show is like. You should have been there. An LSS show is part rock show, part circus side show and part tent revival and, for those lucky enough to witness them, they are never forgotten. This show was no different.

Next time, be there.

This is next time…Three tracks from their new cd Swampblood:

The Legendary Shack Shakers - Old Spur Line
The Legendary Shack Shakers - Swampblood
The Legendary Shack Shakers - Hellwater

There is plenty to do this weekend, so why not get off the couch and go out, instead of bitching on some message board that there isn’t anything to do and this area sucks…

Friday Night: Shannon McNally will be at the Tamiami in St. Petersburg

This will be a nice, chill show. Perfect for some whiskey drinks on a Friday night after a long week. Performing self described ‘North American Ghost Music’, her voice has been described as sultry, swaggering, and striking a stylistic pose between the R&B grittiness of Bonnie Raitt and the softer jazz/pop edges of Nina Simone. If that sounds like your cup of tea at all, then come down to the Tamiami for “an exposition of Americana/bar-band motifs delivered with a fire and finesse that set them well above most practitioners.

Shannon McNally - Bohemian Wedding Prayer

Sunday Night: Laura Love will be at Skipper’s Smokehouse

If you do not burn it too hard at Guavaween on Saturday night, you can head out to Skipper’s Smokehouse Sunday for one of the greatest female singers/performers you’ve heard of. I’ll quote myself:

Laura’s music is best described as an afrocentric meshing of bluegrass, funk, and folk that is impossible not to move to. Lyrically her songs run the gamut from humorous, to political at times, sometimes personal, but always thought provoking. Then there is her voice. In a word I would have to describe her voice as amazing. Listening to her cover Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” and the acapella song “Blind Bartimus” off Octoroon literally gives me chills. You never know where the songs are going. One song she’ll be reciting nursery rhymes and the next she’ll be talking about watching her ass grow. All of this meshes into pure delight.

You can read more about Laura Love here. Hell, even if you do party too hard on Saturday night, is there any place better than Skipper’s to get over a hangover? I think not.

Laura Love - Can’t Understand

Blackout Creations is having their 1 year anniversary tonight. Aside from a free show with free drinks at the shop there will be an afterparty across the street at Cafe’ Bohemia and Steve’s Tavern. They will be showing Big Trouble in Little China on the wall at Bohemia and there will be drink specials at Steve’s (the most awesome bar on Central Ave.). Here is the official word:

alright starting at 8 the first 50 people get a limited shirt gift bag, with chances to win toys. Then after the show at the after party at steves tavern 2 dollar wells, and drafts. Cafe Bohemia next door to steves, the movie big trouble in litte china will be played huge on a wall and 2.50 new castle bottles. So be ready to come early and stay late. That is all

Come out, have fun…then join me at Steve’s around 10:00 to cuss at my Seminoles.

And, because every post needs an mp3: The Fox Hunt - Getting Drunk (by yourself) <- you know it’s true…turn off W.O.W. and come get drunk with people.

And because a post with two mp3’s is 48% better than a post with one: The Molenes - Brand New Yesterday

It’s been quiet around town for a few weeks, but it looks like this weekend will be making up for it. When it rains it pours, I guess, but it’s better than sitting at home and watching pre-season football.

Friday Night @ Skipper’s Smokehouse:

Jacksonville’s own JJ Grey & Mofro bring their swamp-infused brand of front porch blues/soul music to the Skipperdome. I have never seen these guys live, but everyone I know who has is telling me it is gonna be one of my favorite shows of the year, and I’m totally buying into it, too. I’m loving their new cd, Country Ghetto, and judging from the tunes I can glean from archive.org, the band is tight and energetic. Besides, what could be better than an August night eating fried catfish and gator tail while listening to some bluesy soul music?

JJ Grey and Mofro - Tragic

Opening up for Mofro is a group quickly taking over as my favorite local band, Nervous Turkey. Playing a brand of blues dirtier than a country boy’s, feet Nervous Turkey always puts on an entertaining show and will make for a perfect opener for this evening. So, come out, drink beers, eat fried food and have a good time.

Nervous Turkey - Too Late for Romance

Show starts at 8:00 and tickets will be $22.00.

Saturday Night @ Crowbar:

from aes presents:

“After amicably breaking away from his gig as an axman and songrwriter for DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, Isbell returns with his first solo outing, a gorgeously whiskey-soaked Country-Soul masterpiece. It’s a perfect soundtrack for rocking on the porch or crying into your PBR.” - highly recommended for fans of DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, RYAN ADAMS, UNCLE TUPELO, KINGS OF LEON, THE BOTTLE ROCKETS, etc. - from Muscle Shoals, AL - brand new record, “Sirens of the Ditch”, out now on New West.

I have been looking forward to this show for a few months now. If you are a fan of the rock show this is a must-see. Opening up for Jason is Denton, Texas’ Centro-matic. They come in with a root-rock/alt-country sound and seven albums under their belt. Always a good show, there is no reason for you to show up late for this show.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Try

Doors are at 9:00 and tickets will be $12.00.

ADDITIONAL JASON ISBELL AND CENTRO-MATIC MP3′S ARE AVAILAVLE HERE.

Saturday Night @ Janus Landing:

Like I said earlier, when it rains it pours. Weeks of nothing and then we get two shows on the same damn night. If it weren’t for the Jason Isbell show, I would be at this show for sure. Tech N9ne, Kottonmouth Kings and Hed PE bring it to St. Pete. I don’t really know what the definition of ‘Krunk’ is, but when I think about seeing Tech live, I think K.R.U.N.K.. Fans of that hiphop sound should be at this show. Then email me and tell me what I missed.

Tech N9ne - The Industry is Punks

Doors are at 7:30 and tickets will be $28.00

Waylon’s boy, Shooter, is bringing his version of the outlaw country/rock and roll sound to The State Theater tonight. Tickets are only $12.00 and the whole shindig starts up around 8:00. Get there on time cause it looks like there aren’t any opening acts.

Should be fun. The 5th Street Compound’s bottle of Beam will be getting opened around 6:00. I’ve never seen Shooter live but his latest album,Live At Irving Plaza 04-18-06, sure sounds like great. I expect an equal performance tonight.

Shooter Jennings - Lonesome Blues (live)
Shooter Jennings - Hair of the Dog
Shooter Jennings - Electric Rodeo

Not that you ever need a reason to post some Waylon I figgered I this was a good one:

Whooo Boy. It. is. getting. hot. Sweaty days, rainy afternoons and muggy nights. It’s either miserable or terribly sexy, depending on your mindset. Personally, I don’t mind summer, all the sweaty bodies always remind me of Jack Kerouac’s descriptions of Louisiana nights. So, if the onslaught of summer hasn’t scared you into your air conditioned house ’til November, there are things to do this weekend.

Friday, Saddle Creek recording artists, Two Gallants, are opening up for Les Claypool at Jannus Landing. I fully intend to be present for Two Gallants, but I can guarantee that I’ll be some 10 blocks away, bellied up to the bar at Steve’s Tavern by the time Claypool’s set starts. Honestly, I’m just not a fan of his music. Two Gallants, on the other hand, they are gonna rock the shit outta the place.

Two Gallants - Steady Rollin’

Saturday….oh, shit! the robots are attacking!!!!

The “Robot Invasion” Digital Art Show starts this Saturday at Blackout Creations in St. Pete.

This exhibit showcases robot-themed/robot-inspired artwork by 20+ local, national and international digital illustrators and designers, including Rob Schwager, Julie West, Hydro74, Horse Bites Design, Richard McCaig, Snakebite, Kenny Lindstrom, Steve Firchow and many more.

No cover, all ages welcome, free drinks (with proper ID) and free desserts. Music by DJ Muggles and AE.

Okay. I think that speaks for itself….however, I’ll paraphrase for the ADD and/or stupid here: Saturday. Downtown St. Pete. Robots. Free Adult Beverages. Again. Robots. Free. Adult. Beverages.

Then we finally get a Soprano free Sunday. I never watched the Sopranos, but it has been impossible to escape the Sopranos talk this week. Hell, ESPN has even been on their nuts this week. When I read how it ended it reminded me of Pillars of the Earth. One of the main characters dies about halfway through the book with no fanfare. He falls and “everything went black” and that was it…funeral and the story had a new main character. Well, really, the main character was the church they were building, but whatever. The ending of the Sopranos was “and everything went black” so my admittedly ignorant take is that someone in the diner killed Tony.

Then comes Wednesday, folks. A ninebullets.net guaranteed great show is coming to The Orpheum. You have plenty of warning. Make like me and take Thursday morning off from work. Why? Because Those Legendary Shack*Shakers are coming to town! Imagine Iggy Pop fronting Southern Culture on the Skids….the southern gothic, rock and roll version of the Sex Pistols but with more talent, and you are getting there….you aren’t quite there, but you are getting there. Look. LSS have to be seen to truly be understood. Come. You will like, I promise.

Legendary Shack*Shakers - All My Life To Kill
Legendary Shack*Shakers - Something in the Water
