Up from the ashes of The Weary Boys rises, The Woodsboss. The Woodsboss features former Weary Boys; Darren Sluyter, Brian Salvi and Cary Ozanian. They are joined by Tom VandenAvond, Molly Salvi and Sean Ziggler. There isn’t too much information available at this time. There is a single song posted on their myspace profile and a few show dates in their calendar. Speaking of thier calendar…what’s that I spy? Is that what I think it is? Well shit fire! It sure is. The Woodsboss will be playing New World Brewery in Ybor on April 24. I hope the old Weary faithful come out.

After 13 years of publishing the May-June 2008 issue of No Depression will be their last. Apparently the web site will remain functional but all print efforts will cease. What does this mean for us, the subscribers? As of now, nobody really knows, in their letter from the publishers they say:

“If you have a subscription to ND, please know that we will do our very best to take care of you. We will be negotiating with a handful of magazines who may be interested in fulfulling your subscription. That is the best we can do under the circumstances.”

Great. I hope that doesn’t mean my current No Depression subscription is about to be converted into a Rolling Stone subscription. Regardless, this is a sad day. After the completely predictable posting of the Uncle Tupelo song that gave ND their name and cut is the complete letter from the publishers.

Look, you ain’t gonna read about it on Pitchfork. There will be no coverage on Stereogum, and there will not be breathless update after breathless update by the who’s who of the music blogger world. So what.

On Saturday, August 18 in River Falls, Wisconsin, the best festival of the summer will take place. No, it’s neither Pitchfork fest nor Lollapalooza nor Burning Man nor ACL moved to Wisconsin. No. The first annual Deep Blues Festival will take place. I have had a boner for this show since I read the lineup:

Scott H. Biram, Robert Belfour, Black Diamond Heavies, Elam McKnight, Sweet Velvet C (Chet of the Immortal Lee County Killers), Mark “Porkchop” Holder, Left Lane Cruiser, Moreland & Arbuckle, Hillstomp, William Elliott Whitmore, Radio Moscow, Chris Cotton, Brimstone Howl, John Schooley, The BirdDogs, KM Williams, The Texas Country Blues Preacher and the Trainreck and Johnny Lowebow

Seriously, and anyone who frequents this site knows this to be true, it’s like they made a lineup just for me. One of my top 3 favorite artists of ever, Scott Hiram Biram…probably the best live show I have seen this year in Radio Moscow….William Elliott Whitmore whom I fucking adore and I know is never coming to Florida…Black Diamond Heavies who I still regret missing when they came through town…the boogie woogie machine that is Hillstomp…and I have Brimstone Howl and Moreland & Arbuckle pieces in the works….WTF? This was made for me. The only way it could have possibly been better would have been if they’d have booked Jawbone.

Sadly, unless someone wants to buy me a plane ticket to the show, I will not be making it. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t. This thing in gonna rock so hard it will curl attendees’ butt hairs. For more information, you can check out the Deep Blues Festival’s Official Site or their Myspace site, which includes links to the profiles of all the attendees.

Here is the Deep Blues Festival Sampler:
01 - Scott H Biarm - Wreck My Car
02 - Black Diamond Heavies - Poor Brown Sugar
03 - Robert Belfour - Hill Stomp
04 - Elam McKnight - Black Cat
05 - Sweet Velvet C - Robert Johnson
06 - Mark Holder - My Black Name
07 - Left Lane Cruiser - Big Mama
08 - Moreland and Arbuckle - Caney Valley Blues
09 - William Elliott Whitmore - One Man’s Shame
10 - Hillstomp - Boom Boom Room East Blues
11 - Radio Moscow - Frustrating Sound
12 - Chris Cotton - I Watched The Devil Die
13 - Brimstone Howl - Bad Seed
14 - John Schooley - Drive You Faster
15 - The BirdDogs - White Lightnin’
16 - KM Williams The Texas Country Blues Preacher and the Trainreck - I’m Rollin’
17 - Johnny Lowebow - Amstel Drinking Woman

Below the cut is an interview with the organizer of the festival (aka: my hero) that he did for Honest Tune Magazine.

Lucero gets a whole lot of love from me on ninebullets and that stands to reason considering they are one of my favorite bands. period. They have been gaining more and more momentum with every new cd and each show here in Tampa/St. Pete gets more and more crowded. Most people are not like me and many other music lovers out there. They do not know the names of the band members or post on band message boards or, in general, immerse themselves in these bands and the stories surrounding them. For better or worse, I do. Well, Brian recently made a post on the Lucero message board asking people not to request Darby’s Song anymore. I was not gonna reprint it but Brian gave me permission and I think after reading this you will understand why they won’t be playing it:

“please quit asking us to play darbys song…
we’re not….ever.

april 9th of this year was the 8th anniversary of darbys mother and my best friend katies death…
this is not some sweet sad song about some made up girl for us, she was very real to me and the fact that it even got recorded is amazing in itself.

katie jean killough was 26 in 1999 when she died of stage 4 cancer. when they found the tumor it was graped sized and in her colon, she’d had it since highscool and didn’t know it.
it had spread over the years to her liver, girlparts and her lymph glands.
3 yrs before that she had a very feisty but beautiful little baby girl that she named after darby crash, singer of the germs.
through out her entire pregnancy the doctors never noticed of found any signs of the spreading cancer…

me and katie never dated…never wanted too. we were like brother and sister, always fighting, making food, buying records …she got me the job at the doughnut shop and forced me to move into her room so we could make the rent cheaper.it went from $70 a month for her to $35 a month for the both of us.
we literally lived in a windowless back closet with 2 beds, 2 records collections, 2 record players & 1 fucking lizard that wasn’t mine!

i was very lucky to have katie in my life for as long as i did…
when she found out that she had cancer the doctors told her she had 10 yrs. to live…less than 2 weeks later and more tests that number was changed to a year and a half.
a month later she was told that it had spread farther than they thought and she had about 6months to live…

we all quit or jobs for a month and went on an ill fated trip to cal. that doesn’t really get discussed by the particpants and when she came home she started really freaking out.

she sent darby to live in franklin,tn. with darby’s fathers parents and tattoo’d her face and started using heroin. i got mad and we would fight about her behavior and what i felt she needed, i was being selfish about losing my friend looking back.
we quit talking and a month later she went to live in a krishna temple in india til she died…

i was at a show and went home early luckily when we got the call that katie didn’t have much time left, we all got to say something to her, to tell her we loved her so much.
she was completely out of it and couldn’t hear of understand us at all.
we hung up and something like 10 or 20 mins. later we get the call she had died.

her body was burned on a funeral pyre and her ashes spread in the ghangis river. that was april 9th,1999.

darbys song isn’t so much about darby as it is about katie for me…”

~ Brian

So, don’t be an ass and if you hear someone else screaming for it between songs kindly (not in an a-hole manner, they don’t know) tell them it isn’t a song that gets played at shows.

Lucero - Darby’s Song

I came home last night from the bar a little sideways and read about this on the DBT mailing list. Followed a link over to Jason’s myspace page and read the blog entry everyone was referring to. It seemed real but there was no definite word from any of the power players other than a blog entry. So, I went to bed hoping it wasn’t true and that the blog entries were a joke played on Jason after he forgot to log out of myspace or something. Then this morning I woke up and there was official word from one of the power players confirming the blog entries. Jason is out of the Truckers…..for real.

Fucking sucks.

Man, 2007 has been really terrible for my very favorite bands and this is the third post of this type that I’ve done in a month. All is not lost though. DBT’s lineup has changed a lot over the years so I’m sure they’ll be fine and Jason’s solo cd comes out July 10 and judging from the samples on his myspace site he is gonna be fine as well. I wish both halves good luck and I hope they both get to Tampa/St. Pete soon. Here are my favorite DBT tracks w/Jason singing.

Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day
Drive-By Truckers - Outfit
Drive-By Truckers - Never Gonna Change
Drive-By Truckers - Goddamn Lonely Love

As I’ve said before, I am sure there is and will be plenty of rumor and conjecture about the band and the interpersonal relationships but this site is not about that. Here is the official word as it came down from Patterson and this will probably the last mention about any of this on ninebullets.net until the cds come out. However, If you want to vent about it or offer your version of a conspiracy theory there is a discussion thread about the whole deal over on ninebullets.org:

Y’ALL:

It’s with a wide range of emotions and feelings that I’m announcing
that we have parted ways with Jason.
The split, which I consider extremely amicable is the result of a
period of personal and artistic growth from all sides which has left us
with differing dreams and goals.

Jason joined our band, mid-tour, in the fall of 2001, shortly after the
release of our 4th album (Southern Rock Opera). His impact on the band
was immediate and profound, bringing an awe-inspiring combination of
vocal range, guitar dexterity, and amazing songwriting and leading us
into an era of creativity that has resulted in three albums that I will
be proud of for as long as I live.

Life in a band is always a delicate balancing act of personal and
musical chemistries. Having been in bands for most of my life, I still
marvel that any band stays together for longer than a year. Especially
if the band in question spends anywhere from 150-220 days a year on the
road, as our band has done since 1998. That said, I have also likened
this band to a family. A big, messy, sometimes dysfunctional one, but a
family full of love all the same. It is in this spirit that I plan on
Jason continuing to be a part of our lives wherever our roads and
dreams take us in the immediate future.

Jason is about to embark on a tour (including a leg of dates with Son
Volt) with his stellar band and will be releasing (finally) his amazing
solo album “Sirens of the Ditch” < July 10 from New West Records > . We
all are wishing him nothing but the absolute best on every step that
plays before him.

Cooley and I will have played together for 22 years this summer and DBT
is about to begin it’s 12th year of existence on the very day that we
will be going into the studio to begin recording our 8th album. Cooley
recently sent me a demo of five new songs and yesterday I demoed nine
new ones for consideration. In addition to Shonna and Brad (who is
coming up on ten years in the band) John Neff will be playing with us
full time, playing both guitar and pedal steel. John was a founding
member of the band in 96 and has already played on four of our albums
and has been on the road with us, full time for going on two years.

It is my sincere and and adamant hope that everyone will support all of
us, and by that I mean our band and Jason’s, as we deal with this
transition. Jason’s tenure in this band has been one of the greatest
things that has ever happened to me on a personal and musical level and
our love for him and his music is in no way changed or endangered by
our collective decision to move into different directions.

In addition to the upcoming THE DIRT UNDERNEATH tour and the recording
of our next album, we will also be playing some special ROCK SHOW dates
this summer and hope to do another leg or two of THE DIRT UNDERNEATH in
the fall.

As always, the bond that we have with each other, as well as with the
folks that come to our shows and listen to our records has always been
one of the things that has set this band apart. We plan to continue on
in that tradition and spirit and hope you will come with us as we
attempt to tell another tale and Rock the nights away a little while
longer.

Sincerely Yours,
Patterson Hood

I read some sad news on the internets yesterday and thought I would pass it along. Apparently, Jon Snodgrass, co-vocals and guitars for Drag the River has left mid-tour. There are plenty of rumors and much conjecture out there already, but as this is an .mp3 blog and not a gossip site, I’ll quote the closest official source I could find. The following comes from one of the fellas at Suburban Home Records:

I have spoke to both Dave and Jon twice now. At this point, it is definite that there will be no Jon Snodgrass on the rest of the tour. Drag will continue to play as a 3 piece and as Chad will be the only vocalist, he will only be doing his songs.

As far as what happens after this tour, there is no official news at this point. I would like to think that after everyone has had time to think about it, things will work [themselves] out. Drag are just way too good for this to be the end. They have an entire album recorded and let me just say that it will blow people away.

So that’s it. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail and a little time heals all wounds. I sure am glad I made it to the last Lucero show in time to see them open though. Drag the River was a band I have just started getting into after ignoring them for quite sometime due to a misunderstanding. Hopefully all of this will just turn into a quit the tour thing and we’ll all laugh about it in next tour. For now I’ll have a whiskey drink and put It’s Crazy in the cd changer.

Drag the River - Fire and Flood
Drag the River - Tired and Fired

While we are on this sort of news. Mario left The Weary Boys to pursue his solo career. Neither Mario nor the band have said anything about officially so I keep hoping that it will all be a terrible joke and Mario will take the stage here in Tampa come April 26 but I do not think that will be the case. Again, there is rumor and speculation but I am not in the business of spreading such things so I’ll just reprint what I was told by Mario via email:

Basically, we are all still friends but I was just feeling like my heart wasn’t in it anymore especially in regards to creativity. I think the rest of the guys sensed this and started to resent me for it. It just seemed like I should quit before I became an enemy to my friends. So, I’m doing my solo thing now and I’m gonna see where it takes me.

Hopefully things will work out for both Mario and The Wearies. As I said earlier, The Weary Boys are playing New World here in Tampa on April 26. I am not sure what to expect of a Mario-less version of the band but you can beat your ass I’ll be there to find out. I also hope Mr. Matteoli manages to make it down to Tampa with the same frequency he did as a Weary Boy. Here’s to wishing the best of luck to both efforts.

The Weary Boys - Good Times
The Weary Boys - Baby Have No Fun

Mario Matteoli - Hard Luck Hittin
Mario Matteoli - Sun Keeps Beatin’ Down

Tomorrow we’ll try and lighten things up a little by talking about Tijuana hookers a donkey shows and a bad rash.

update: Jon left this message on the DTR message board today:

I did not quit Drag the River. Drag the River is Chad and I’s band….Chad is also my best friend.
I did however quit this tour….it had to be done.
…talk later, sorry everybody.

Well, that is good news indeed.

Well, I am back home. Trying to get back into the rut. Colorado was awesome…we got over a foot of snow while we were out there and come home relatively unscathed. The wife broke her toe which ended her snowboarding 3 days in but that was the only injury. While I was out there I spent a lot of time listening to the recently leaked Clutch and RJD2 albums. Later this week or next I plan to write about them. FTR though, they are both wonderful albums. So, in the coming days things will get back to normal…the day job piled up while I was gone and posting may be a tad irregular while I try and excavate myself from it.

For the Tampa/St. Pete people; here are some upcoming shows you should really try and attend. I will be at them all.
