Note: I was planning on posting this last Friday to close out the week of classic country but I got sidetracked.
What better way to close out a week of new bands making classic country than with one of the old guard making a new album? A new Waylon Jenning’s album, Waylon Forever, was released last week. Yes, I know, Waylon’s been dead for a few years, but it ain’t like that’s stopped Tupac.
Waylon Forever was pooled from some old recordings and features some covers, some remakes and one new Waylon track. The standout track for me is “Outlaw Sh*t”, which is actually a retooled, slightly reworded and slowed down version of his classic, “Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Outta Hand”. Some are calling it Waylon’s “Hurt” and only time will tell, I suppose. I like it, but to me it just doesn’t possess the power that Cash’s cover of “Hurt” does, but that’s just me…it’s an awesome song no matter what. The single new Waylon song is called “I Found The Body” and I really love this song. The chorus on it really has a Waylon-meets-Everlast (first album style) feel to it. Really nice.
Most posthumous albums have a real disjointed and incomplete feel to them, but Waylon Forever does not suffer that fate. It feels as though Waylon was standing over the mixing boards for the entire process. This isn’t an album just for the Jennings completionist, everyone should give it a listen…I mean, who hasn’t wondered what a Waylon cover of Cream’s “White Room” would have sounded like? Wonder no more, it’s here and it’s awesome.

if more country music was this good..I wouldn’t ignore it like the commercial plague it’s become…..everybit as wretched as every other form of commercial pop. I found the body borrows a lot from Pink Floyd (much more than Everlast). filters that sound through a country ear and becomes something new and enjoyable…..loved it
being a non-fan of Pink Floyd I’ll have to take your word for it.
[...] Waylon’s voice trembles with regret as he recalls the coked-up caricature he slipped into during the late 1970s, the renegade singer who stays outside the law with a crippling drug habit rather than a bandit’s pistol. Strings and spooky sound effects will piss off purists but it works for me. To download an MP3 of “Outlaw Shit” visit our pal Autopsy IV over at Ninebullets.net. [...]
God bless Waylon Jennings.
