THE BUILDERS AND THE BUTCHERS – DEAD RECKONING

I am in love with The Builders and The Butchers. If I were making a list of my favorite bands right now they’d land end the top 10. I feel I should just tell you that straight away. They were a “current band crush” when Reverend Marcus brought them to my attention with Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well. It took hearing about three tracks of Dead Reckoning, feeling the seemingly ever-present but never released rage in the songs, as Ryan Sollee’s voice tugged at the hair on the back of my neck, for the crush to be come a full-fledged and torrid love affair.

While the topics of death, good, evil, the grey areas in between, gods, devils and the end are similar, to label The Builders and The Butchers a mere Southern Gothic band is a disservice. Like Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, they’re bigger than that. These guys are busy crafting a genre all their own while we (bloggers) are desperately trying to shove them into some familiar box. Well not me, I’m gonna pour a glass of whiskey, put on some headphones and let the tension build as these stories and their songs wash over me.

Did I mention that I was in love with these guys? Not only is the album Dead Reckoning Essential Listening and a dead ringer (see what I did there?) for my best of 2011 best of list, but the cover is easily in the running for cover of the year, too.
