I should also add that while he was here Malcolm visited our radio show, and spent an hour chatting, selecting music from his friends (Tandy, David Olney, Gurf Morlix, Ed Snodderly) as well as playing three songs live for us. Tampa was the same…all the way down to him forgetting to put his cds out.

Fucking awesome.

Combine the voice of Tom Waits with the folksiness of John William Davis with the songwriting of John Prine with the side-to-side head shake of Richard Nixon with the fragility of Todd Snider with the antsiness of James Brown – sometimes he’d stand and lean into the microphone (which was adjusted to his seated position) and when he was sitting, he’d get the wooden chair rocking back and forth such that I just knew he’d topple backward (but he didn’t).

His lyrics are brilliant and his guitar-playing captivating – it felt as if he didn’t need us there at all… as if this was some sort of personal catharsis/exorcism he had to undergo each night. When we’d applaud after each song, he’d wave us off like a bad pitch – his between-song banter was whack but entertaining…

The proprietress of the cafe had to remind him to put out his CDs… and even then he forgot – finally located the box, which he put at the edge of the stage after his sets.

Amazing night – so glad I went…
