NINE BULLETS SPRING SHOWCASE + FAREWELL FROM MICHELLE

Nine Bullets Spring Showcase 2015

Hey, folks! I’m gonna make this short and sweet. I’ve got two things for ya:

First off, as many of you have heard by now (I hope), Nine Bullets is sponsoring a Spring Showcase in a couple weeks. It’s on May 30th, to be exact, at Al’s Bar here in my new hometown of Lexington, KY. The lineup is gonna be incredible. I’ve chosen acts who I think represent some of the best in the region (with a few touring acts sprinkled in), and that I hope you will love as much as I do. Some you’ve heard of, some maybe you haven’t – all of them are great.

There will be five acts on the main stage along with five (mostly) acoustic acts in the adjacent Beer Garden, all for just eight bucks:

Nine Bullets Spring Showcase 2015 Poster by Sarah Davis

For a taste of what’s in store for you, here’s a video of Tyler Childers (on the bill again this year) performing his yet unreleased song, “Feathered Indians,” at last year’s event, and here’s what Autopsy IV said about one of his live EPs. Childers actually inspired and encouraged me to make this an annual event, so, hey, thanks, buddy!

That’s about all I have for you on that front. I didn’t wanna bombard you with tons of links to the artists, because I’m pretty sure most of you have heard of them already, and, if you haven’t, I’m pretty sure you know how to use the internet to find out more about them for yourselves.

As for the second thing, well, if you haven’t guessed it from the title, this is going to be my last post at Nine Bullets as a Contributor. Maybe I will guest post every now and then, but I will no longer be part of the staff. Nine Bullets has been very good to me over the past three years, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. (Thanks, you guys.) For those of you who follow Dear Ben Nichols, you may recall that I had to hand over the reigns, because I’ve got a lot going on and will for the foreseeable future. Well, that’s the case even more so now. Doc Feldman of Shaker Steps (and a mighty fine musician in his own right) and I are teaming up for some really exciting music-related ventures that we’re working hard on to make happen. If you want to keep up with us, then keep an eye on the Shaker Steps Facebook Page for updates and announcements.

Anyway, I hope to see you at the Spring Showcase! We can drink all the whiskey drinks!

Get tons of info on the acts, venue, tickets, area hotels, and all that good stuff at the official event invitation. Don’t have Facebook? No problem. Take a look-see and watch more videos on Tadoo.com, or check out Al’s Bar for info and to buy tickets.

EP REVIEW EXTRAVAGANZA – JAMISON, MUHRONI, CHILDERS

cover

BONES MUHRONI – HABITS

Bones Muhroni are the epitome of the fun band that you knew in college. Their wild energy and excitement at performing are hard to get across without seeing them live, but damned if “Habits” off of the eponymous EP doesn’t come close. Chris ‘Bones’ Jones and Crew ‘Muhroni’ choogle through the track with bleary self-awareness (was that right? Did I use ‘choogle’ right? Am I a music journalist now?), the style and tempo of the song shifting at their slightest whim. That’s who Bones Muhroni is: a fun band throwing a lot of different sounds at the wall and seeing what sticks. You may have a hard time finding a consistent through-line for the four tracks on this EP, but one thing you won’t have a hard time finding is blunt, almost naive, honesty.

TYLER CHILDERS – LIVE ON RED BARN RADIO II

If you have been paying attention to this blog, you know the name Tyler Childers. He released his first record at 20 (check out Autopsy IV’s review here) and then nothing else came out for three or so years. His Live on Red Barn Radio was stellar, and felt too short for something that sounded so promising. This EP is the companion to that one, and while it may not seem as impressive it’s hard to hold that against Childers: if all 8 of these songs were on a full-length album it would undoubtedly be Essential Listening. Pick up this EP and join the rest of us frothing at the mouth for his sophomore LP.

Coming Down

cover

CHRIS JAMISON – SLEEPING WITH THE TV ON

This EP has been out for almost a year now, but only came to my attention recently. Jamison has a quiet voice and penchant for metaphor that reminds me of Joey Kneiser, though it would be hard for anyone to actually match up to the Glossary front-man. Some of these tracks are a little too over-produced for my taste, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s some solid songwriting going on here. “Waiting on a Change” has a quiet, almost forlorn melody that sticks with you for a while. ‘The good never win, because they can’t leave well enough alone’. Check this record out, and I know I’ll be keeping an eye on Jamison in the future.

TYLER CHILDERS – LIVE ON RED BARN RADIO

Hey everyone. Autopsy IV here. Told y’all I’d stick around and I could not be happier to use this Tyler Childers EP as my initial 9b post as a mere contributor.

I initially wanted to title this post as “Introducing Tyler Childers” but the fact that Michelle had interviewed him meant that, technically, y’all had been introduced to him–the man–if not his music.

Tyler Childers released Bottle & Bibles at 19 years old. It’s an album that I never would have reviewed on ninebullets but I would have noted Tyler as someone to pay attention to. It’s not a bad album, fuck there are glorious moments, but at 40 there are enough “that’s a kid talking” moments in it that I’d never listen to it on the reg, or, at all to be honest.

Flash forward a few years and we get this live album. Four songs. All live. All recorded immaculately. All fan–fucking–tastic. This kid has grown up and I am not talking about age. I’m talking as a songwriter. At the risk of speaking in hyperbole, he reminds me of a young Isbell in a songwriting way. Get on board with this kid. At worst, you get 4 awesome songs At best, in 4 years you’ll be able to tell your buddies you been trying to tell them about Tyler for years and you’ll look amazing.

It’s tough to do this since I don’t own the site anymore but I’m doing it anyhow……It may only be 4 songs but I’m dubbing this bitch Essential Listening.
