Matt Phelan is Probably Cooler Than You

mp

For the last five months Matt Phelan, bassist for the now defunct Truckstop Darlin’, has been hiking across the country. At this point he’s covered over 2,100 miles, on foot! He’s been hiking The Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico and is currently in Washington, headed for Canada. As far as social media goes he’s been pretty quiet but over the weekend he announced a site chronicling his journey in both pictures and words. This is a very cool thing that he’s doing and things like this are things you are supposed to do when you’re young.

I got to meet Matt, and the rest of the band, on their last tour when they came through Houston. They were all amazing guys and it makes me happy to see him accomplish something like this, a thing that most of us will only ever dream about. I hope that folks can take inspiration from Matt and maybe start their own epic journey! Normally I’d ask Matt if I could use a couple pics from the site but I think this is something that you should go view, start to finish. Instead of pics from his journey, here are some Truckstop Darlin’ songs to listen to while you go through the site…

PLAYLIST: NINEBULLETS RADIO 06.14.2012

I am trying something new with the track listing by including the album that the songs came from. Not sure if anyone actually reads these things but I thought that might be a useful piece of information that I was removing from the official playlist when I post it here. So lemme know if that’s something you appreciate/will use.

Last week’s show turned out so good I consciously went into this show trying to duplicate it. The lesson here is that the show just needs to happen organically. It’s still a good show, I just feel like the playlist is a little forced at spots. That said, it’s about the music, not my DJ prowess and the music is top notch. I continue my unrelenting push of McDougall by reaching into his back catalog for a song that’s a must hear for fans of the Tim Barry ethos. There is also a song from Florida’s Owsley Brothers that’s all sorts of groovetastic and you never go wrong with a little Left Lane Cruiser and Rev. Peyton. Towards the end the show starts to relax and features one of my newest obsessions, The Great Unknowns. If all of this sounds like something you’d be willing to invest an hour into then put some ears on the archived stream of the show and thanks for tuning in.

Below is the playlist for June 14, 2012 [Artist – Song – Album]

PLAYLIST: NINEBULLETS RADIO 06.07.2012

Last night was the 75th episode of Ninebullets Radio! Pretty cool. I just wish I’d noticed it last night. Oh well. It’s still pretty neat and hopefully there will be 75 more and maybe some of those will be 2 hours long.

I may not have realized/remembered that it was the 75th week of Ninebullets Radio but the track listing still ended up being something special. Some shows are better than others and I truly feel like last night’s was one of the best I’ve done in a while. It had a little of everything; country, punk blues, rock, men singers, women singers, local and national bands. Not sure how it came out so well but I’m glad it did so make sure you put some ears on the archived stream of the show and thanks for tuning in.

For the first time in my short radio career I had to program a show last night despite not feeling very well. While the show (i think) turned out pretty good it was really tough to get inspired to search out much brand new music. I did manage to get some brand new songs from Denver’s Bonnie and the Beard, Portland’s Michael Dean Damron, Orlando’s The Woolly Bushmen, Louisiana’s Hurray For The Riff Raff and the internet’s Noah with his “semi-viral” cover of LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It.”

If that sounds like the good stuff go put some ears on the archived stream of the show and thanks for tuning in.

Below is the playlist for May 17, 2012

01. Todd Farrell – Ninebullets Radio Intro

PLAYLIST: NINEBULLETS RADIO 05.10.2012

Whew. I’m a little late getting this one up. The past 3 days have been a whirlwind of beer, vodka, whiskey, rock shows and front porch laughs but now it’s back to the real world…

Anyhow, last week’s show featured Von from Americana Rock Mix pulling a cohost stint. It’s been a while since we had Von in studio so it was a whole lot of fun. He pulled a lot of the music for the show and much of it, I’d never even heard before. I bookended the show with a Beastie Boys cover and one of their hits while dropping a little McDougall in the middle of it all. Von and I have a worthwhile discussion about The Gaslight Anthem and the possibility that they’re just a one trick pony in the middle of it all too. If none of that is enough to entice you into listening to the show did you know that James Leg (Black Diamond Heavies) and Left Lane Cruiser are putting out an album together? Neither did I! But I did play the first single during the show.

Sound like the good stuff? Then go put some ears on the archived stream of the show.

Below is the playlist for May 10, 2012

01. Portland Country Underground – Fight For Your Right
02. JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound – Everything Will Be Fine

08. The Gaslight Anthem – 45
09. Arliss Nancy – Pages

The past few weeks have seen 9b Radio sit in a more mellow groove so I decided to up the rock level of this week’s show. It certainly didn’t hurt to have Truckstop Darlin’ and Tin Horn Prayer send me brand new songs and when you combined those with Sunday Valley, an unreleased track from the Bohannons the rock kind of upped itself. Even the requests fit the overall feel I was going for last night so good job to the listeners. Now! Go put some ears on the archived stream of the show.

ANOTHER KICKSTARTER I CAN (and have) GET BEHIND: TRUCKSTOP DARLIN'

I met Truckstop Darlin’s former drummer last time I was out in Colorado and as a result, was exposed to Truckstop Darlin’. Since then, I’ve been a card carrying fan of the band as the Ninebullets Podcast & Ninebullets Radio playlists have shown. Well, they’ve take to kickstarter in an attempt to record a second record and I’ve taken to the website to let y’all know about it.

So, if you’ve got a little spare change in your pockets and you wanna help out an awesome band, I present the Truckstop Darlin’ Second Record Kickstarter Campaign.

from their self-titled debut:
Truckstop Darlin’ – Bluegrass State
Truckstop Darlin’ – Tired Old Prom Queens

NINEBULLETS.NET DECEMBER 2010 PODCAST: SOME OF MY FAVORITE SONGS FROM 2010 EDITION:

Here we are at the end of another year. All things considered, it was a pretty good one. On a personal level, I came into 2010 facing some pretty freaky & scary health issues and I’m leaving more or less in tact and healthy. Both my Seminoles and my Buccaneers had positive seasons while it looks like my Lightning are gonna be in the playoff conversation all season. Musically, it was a pretty solid year too and that’s what we’re really here to talk about now ain’t it.

In preparation for this show I literally (yes, I am properly using the word) collected 70+ songs I wanted to play and set to making a podcast. I say that so you know that this isn’t a “best songs of the year” show so much as a “some of my favorite songs of the year” that fit the flow of this particular show. That said, there are some seriously good songs assembled in here.

And, 2011 is already shaping up to be pretty fucking phenomenal. Hopefully, this won’t be the final ninebullets.net podcast but there’s more about that in the show, so for now, let’s just listen to the music:
