SOANGELICATE’S ROCK REPORT: RA RA RIOT @ THE CROWBAR, YBOR

Ra Ra Riot has been on my radar since their eponymous 2007 EP but I honestly never expected them to come to Tampa. When the show was announced, I was surprised that not only were they coming to my town, but the show would be in the cozy confines of the Crowbar. Would Tampa show up for this must see show on a weeknight? In the rain? Yes and yes, even the double whammy of a wet weeknight didn’t stop the show from selling out and the place from being filled wall to wall.

The full six member band was quite an impressive sight on the intimate stage, especially because two of them were playing stringed instruments, a cello and a violin. Some bands have a violinist step in for one or two songs, but not RRR. These are full time band members playing their instruments on nearly every song, and cellist Alexandra Lawn even had her debut as a lead vocalist on the last release, The Orchard. In fact, “You And I Know” may have been my favorite song in an overall brilliant performance from the band, and I’d be surprised and disappointed if I didn’t get to hear more from her on future releases. They played every single song I wanted to hear from their back catalog, mixed in with a lot of the newer stuff. I have to admit that I hadn’t given the last album a lot of playing time, but I’m definitely planning to give The Orchard more attention now.

Opening the show was local band The Sleepy Vikings, self-described “loud country shoegaze”, followed by The Luyas, a Canadian band that brought out such artillery as the French horn and hand bells. It was a bit too quirky for me, but I may download a song or two to check them out.

Check out some more shots from the show here

THE BLACK KEYS MEET BIG BOI IN "THE BROTHERS OF CHICO DUSTY":

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your holiday’s were good. My long weekend was stellar. FSU tried to break Marcus Lattimore’s jaw on New Years Eve and then proceeded to just beat up on South Carolina while earlier in the afternoon USF took care of Clemson to capture the biggest bowl win in that young program’s history. Sunday saw the Buccaneers get their 10th win of the season and lemme tell you, if you’d have bet me Tampa was gonna win 10 games at the beginning of the year you’d own my left nut right now. The national press isn’t paying much attention to what’s happening down here in Tampa but I’ll tell you what…the Bucs are about to be an NFL powerhouse again. But enough about sports. Let’s talk about some music.

I have probably listened to this album 50 times since finding out about it last week. If you’ve been without internet access and don’t know about it, it’s a mashup featuring the beats of ninebullets.net’s album of the year, Brothers by The Black Keys and vocal tracks from Big Boi‘s 2010 effort The Son of Chico Dusty. In a word this album is “pure fun” which is actually two words but that’s how crazy I am for this album. Check it out and we’ll get back to our alt.country leanings tomorrow:

While we’re posting fun stuff here’s a video of Slobberbone absolutely crushing on a cover of Cee Lo Green‘s current hit, “Fuck You”.

CAITLIN ROSE – OWN SIDE NOW

I think I heard Caitlin’s EP, Dead Flowers, but it didn’t make much of an impression on me. I only remember seeing the CD cover. I didn’t even recall her name when I decided to do a little research on the opener for tonight’s Justin Townes Earle show here in Tampa.

Shame on me.

This new album from Caitlin is silky smooth, fun and infectious as hell. I definitely wouldn’t classify the album as a “country” album though. No, I’d file it under the same label as Justin’s latest effort, Harlem River Blues. Kind of contemporary pop with country undertones? The kind of sound you might pick up at a Starbucks or hear on “All Songs Considered”. Normally, the Starbucks thing would be meant as a backhanded slap but that’s not the case here. I genuinely like the album, I just can’t find a better (more accurate) descriptor for the sound. Think of her as the more upbeat sister of Jessica Lea Mayfield. Her vocal stylings have drawn comparisons to Patsy Cline and I see no reason to disagree.

Anyhow, check out this album and if you’re in Tampa/St. Pete join me at the show tonight and let’s see how this 23 year old lays it down live.

TAMPA/ST. PETE TO DO/TICKET GIVE AWAY: JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE – THURSDAY NIGHT @ CROWBAR

Fresh outta rehab, Bloodshot recording artist, Justin Townes Earle has packed a suitcase full of stylish suits and set back on the road in support of his latest album, Harlem River Blues. This tour will bring Justin into Florida for what I am told is not his first time but it’s certainly the first time in a really really long time.

I was in attendance for a Justin Townes Earle show at SxSW last year and I can saw that it sounded pretty good. I couldn’t tell you what it looked like cause I was way too late in arrival to get close enough to actually see the Yard Dog stage. Normally, when an artist goes into rehab what emerges is usually changed. Some come out focused and better, some come out incomplete and lost. For Justin is seems rehab has done him some good. I’ll quote one of his more fair critics who caught his show the other night:

So how was the Justin Townes Earle performance?

It was fucking phenomenal. Absolutely unbelievable. It was the best live performance I have seen all year. Hell, it may be the best music performance I have seen, ever. It was genuine, it was pure, and outright magical. Justin Townes Earle is gifted beyond words, and it seems almost foolish to try and describe it. I’ve given careful, sober thoughts to my reactions to his performance Saturday night at The Parish in Austin, TX, and I can say with confidence that Justin Townes Earle is nothing less than a national treasure.

So there you go. It’s shaping up to be an epic close to a phenomenal year. I wouldn’t miss this one if I were you Tampa/St. Pete…..God knows when he’ll be back around these parts.

Justin Townes Earle – Lone Pine Hill
Justin Townes Earle – Mama’s Eyes
Justin Townes Earle – Move over Mama

Aestheticized Presents was kind enough to give ninebullets a pair of tickets to give away for the show here on the site. So, the first person to email me the name of Justin’s father as well as the person Justin was named for will win the tickets & if this text isn’t stricken out, no one has won. CONGRATULATIONS JOHN ALLMAN! SEE YOU AT THE SHOW.

TAMPA/ST. PETE HAPPENINGS:

Looking for something amazing to do tonight? How about checking out some amazing music from some of the best bands Florida has to offer while sipping beers at one of the best beer bars in Tampa?

Lauris Vidal is celebrating the release of his new album, Better Part, down in Ybor City tonight along with ninebullets faves, Have Gun Will Travel and Devon Stuart. Devon will have Mr. Michael Claytor with him as well. So, come join me at New World and we’ll work on drinking enough that the ass whipping Cincinnati is gonna put on the USF Bulls doesn’t sting quite so much.

Lauris Vidal – Better Part

Saturday sees the 7th edition of the annual Carlsfest. Carlsfest is the annual celebration of Carl Granger‘s birthday and also happens to be the only day of the year Carl drinks. The festivities start early with everyone meeting at noon for a scavenger hunt. Tomorrow night everyone will gather at The Bar for some drinky drinks and music provided by Devon and Michael. The good news is that the gators aren’t playing so none of the party goers will be mourning a 4th straight defeat.
