STREAM THE NEW OTIS GIBBS ALBUM, HARDER THAN HAMMERED HELL:

Yesterday. Well, to put it simply, sucked a dirty asshole. My mountain bike got stolen out of my garage and I learned that my homeowner’s insurance pays a maximum of 1000 dollars on a bike (less than 1/2 of what the bike was worth). Now, I am bikeless and looking at the replacement bike being a massive downgrade from what I had.

Boo-fucking-hiss.

All of that was made a little more tolerable this morning though when I got to work and saw that the new Otis Gibbs album, Harder Than Hammered Hell, is now available for streaming/purchase. There is no bad news that doesn’t falter under the weight of awesome new music to listen too and new Otis certainly qualifies. So, get your ears on this and if someone has a really sweet mountain bike they’re looking to unload I am suddenly in the market.

CHET O’KEEFE – GAME BIRD

Per his bio, Chet comes out of New Hampshire, having traveled the country via cars, buses, vans, backs of pickups and railcars, sleeping where he could find a bed along the way and pitching a tent when he couldn’t. He’s backed up Bo Diddley and he wrote The Gibson Brothers’ track “Ring the Bell.”

It’s only appropriate that Otis Gibbs got to mention this album on ninebullets before I did, since he was the one that put me onto it via twitter last month. It’s also appropriate that Otis turned me onto Chet’s newest album, Game Bird, as they come from the same section of the singer/songwriter cafeteria, although Chet might gravitate a little to the John Prine table than Otis would. Game Bird features Thomm Jutz and Pat McInerney from Nanci Griffith’s band, as well as Nanci herself occasionally on backing vocals, pedal steel player Robby Turner, Jimmie McEachern on bass and Brent Moyers on trumpet. From the upbeat tounge-in-cheek swing of “Take Me To The Liquor Store” to the darker moodiness that we’ve come to expect from those Canadian bands of “Game Bird” the band allows Chet to make use of a wider range of sound than you might find on the average singer/songwriter album and he does a fantastic job of utilizing it.

Check out the mp3s and if you like what you hear, head over to bandcamp and pick up the album.

Chet O’Keefe – Take Me Down (To The Liquor Store)
Chet O’Keefe – Game Bird
Chet O’Keefe – Econoline Van

GUEST POST: 3 ALBUMS FROM OTIS GIBBS:

Note from AIV: Otis approached me about this post and I thought it was a great idea and I hope to make it a reoccurring piece here on 9B. Hope you enjoy.

As a traveling musician, I’m given countless CDs from people I meet on the road. I have no interest in being a music critic, but I try my best to listen to as many as I can. In the spirit of turning people on to good music, this is a list of three records that stand out from the crowd.

Thanks for giving a damn,
Otis Gibbs

ADAM CARROLL

I met Adam a few years ago at a festival in Colorado. I was booked to do a songwriters round with Adam and Tim Easton. At the time, Tim and I had never heard of Adam, but we were completely blown away. Later that night, Adam and I hung out and he gave me this record. Since then, Adam has become one of my favorite songwriters and has released quite a few wonderful albums. I think this album is a great starting point and it’s one that I keep coming back to time and again. If you search around on Youtube you can find people like Slaid Cleaves and Hayes Carll covering Adam’s songs. Recommended if you like Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zandt.

Adam Carroll – Erroll’s Song

JASON EKLUND

Jason and I met while we were playing a hobo gathering in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After the gig, he handed me a CD-R that he’d written his name and album title on with black marker. My best buddy Todd and I drove home to Indianapolis after the gig and listened to this album 3 times straight through. I found out a few years later that the record was produced by Gurf Morlix and had guest appearances by Rick Richards, Guy Forsyth, Carolyn Wonderland and Slaid Cleaves (just to name a few). I did a quick Google search and wasn’t able to find anywhere to buy this record online. I’m hoping that you’ll be able to hunt it down, because it’s well worth the effort. Recommended if you like John Prine, Woody Guthrie.

Jason Eklund – Farmer Ain’t The Man

CHET O’KEEFE

A mutual friend took Amy and I to a dive bar in Nashville (Brown’s Diner) to see Chet. I was instantly a fan. I loved his voice, his guitar playing and his writing immediately. This record was recorded and produced by my buddy Thomm Jutz, and it showcases Chet at his finest. Chet recently toured Ireland with Nanci Griffith and was awarded “Song Of The Year” in 2010 by the International Bluegrass Music Association (beating out Guy Clark and Bill Monroe). Recommended if you like John Prine, Bob Dylan, Blaze Foley. (AIV Note: We have a full 9B piece on Chet’s album planned for the near future.)

Chet O’Keefe – Game Bird

BACK FROM SxSW (WITH PHOTOBLOG):

Phew! Back from SxSW and back at work. 9B as normal will resume tomorrow. I have some good videos and a few stories I’ll relay over the coming week or so as well. SxSW was good. It was wise to lay off the booze this year. I had a lot more fun and feel way better in the afterglow that I did last year. Other than that it was a typical SxSW. Friends were made, friends were lost, miles were walked and shows were seen. I’d like to drop a special thank you to the guys from Two Cow Garage for basically talking me off a ledge one morning and to all the bands who played or showed up to watch the 9B parties. If anyone is interested, my version of a SxSW photoblog is after the cut:
