SAVE A BEARD – KICKSTART OTIS GIBBS

I know it. You know it. Every mediocre songwriter on this planet knows it: The magic powers of the best songwriters around are located in their beard.

I have tried for 40 years to grow a respectable beard. Currently without any luck. The owner of this fine website has done the same, currently with a lot more luck. In a few years he’ll be a singer/songwriter.

These days we can’t gather enough positive words around here to describe the recent music of people like John Moreland, David Mayfield and McDougall. And Otis Gibbs.

You know as well as I do that the world slowly becomes a better place with each new song Otis Gibbs writes and releases.

Now he has gathered enough songs to start recording a new album. He’s going to call it “Souvenirs Of A Misspent Youth” and he currently has a Kickstarter campaign running. He says he’s even willing to shave his beard to make it happen.

But please, people! Don’t let it happen! Don’t let him shave his magic powers away. Give him money! In return he’ll give you SONGS! The most powerful thing on this planet. He’ll even throw in a fishing trip, a talk on skype or even help you record one of your songs if you contribute enough.

So go ahead! Contribute whatever you’re able to! I need this album. You need this album. The world needs this album! The United Brotherhood Of Beared Singer/Songwriters (sisters certainly welcome)  needs this album.

THE NINEBULLETS.NET PODCAST: EPISODE 29

Woot! It was nice to get back to the podcast. Mad props to Charles for keeping it active and awesome the past two months. So awesome, in fact, we’re gonna start alternating months so you’ll hear him again in November. Like I was saying though, I am naturally a night person so I find actual enjoyment in staying up till 3:00 in the morning making these on Friday nights and after 2 months off, I had plenty of music to pick from.

I tried to keep the podcast from being a facsimile of the radio show and I think I did an okay job of it. There are still some similarities but come on. New SnakehealersAmerican Aquarium and new-slash-old Frank Turner demand they be played and I just found the Allen Thompson Band and local kids The Black Roses are in heavy rotation in my car so it should be no surprise they’re starting to creep into all my musical products.

Scattered amongst all that is a double scoop of awesome ready to make sweet sweet love to your ear drums. Give it a chance. I think you’ll like it.

Here is the tracklisting and as Otis Gibbs says, thanks for giving a damn.

01. Sunday Valley – I Don’t Mind (To The Wind And On To Heaven)
02. Frank Turner – The Road (Last Minutes & Lost Evenings)
03. Chuck Ragan – Nomad By Fate (Covering Ground)
04. McDougall – 18 Days Of Rain (Our New Histories)
05. Snakehealers – Easy Young Easy Old (Cure All)
06. Two Cow Garage – No Shame (Three)
07. American Aquarium – Burn.Flicker.Die (Burn.Flicker.Die)
08. Allen Thompson Band – Everybody Knows (Salvation In The Ground)
09. JKutchma & The Five Fifths – Used To Believe (Pastorals)
10. Joe Pug – Not So Sure (Messenger)
11. Tim Barry – ‘222’ (Manchester)
12. The Black Roses – Her Love Stops Atom Bombs (self-titled)
13. The Owsley Brothers – Hot Mess (Cobalt)
14. James Leg & Left Lane Cruiser – Shake It (Painkillers)
15. Kasey Anderson – Some Depression (unreleased)

PLAYLIST: NINEBULLETS RADIO 05.31.2012

I was back in the saddle last night after taking a week off and boy howdy it sure felt good. As you can see from the image above, the ninebullets radio stickers came in this week as well. PLAYLIST: NINEBULLETS RADIO 05.03.2012

Most of the time you go to the station, do your show and leave. It becomes a routine of sorts. Occasionally you do a show that you really feel good about. Last night was one such show. Not sure what it is that sets some apart from the rest but whatever it is, last night’s has it.

I opened the show with a Lumineers, Mastersons, The District Attorneys set I’d been thinking about doing for a few weeks but wasn’t sure how it would go over with the listeners. While the middle of the show features a brand new Gaslight Anthem track as well as a set featuring some of the bands I am looking forward to seeing at next week’s Tropical Heatwave. Finally, on a whim I decided to close the show with a track from the new OFF! album. That’s probably what put the show over the top for me.

Sound like the good stuff? Then go put some ears on the archived stream of the show.

Below is the playlist for May 03, 2012

01. Otis Gibbs – The People’s Day
02. The Lumineers – Ho Hey
03. The Mastersons – You Don’t Know
04. The District Attorneys – Worry About Your Health

06. Tin Horn Prayer – Stumble
07. Damion Suomi – Ghost
08. Greenland Is Melting – No Matter What You See
09. Have Gun Will Travel – To The Victor Goes The Spoils
10. Matt Woods – Beating Down My Door
11. JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – Want More
12. Joseph Huber – Iron Rail
13. Steep Canyon Rangers – Between Midnight and The Dawn
14. Hurray for The Riff Raff – Born To Win (Part One)
15. OFF! – Feelings Were Meant To Be Hurt

OTIS GIBBS – HARDER THAN A HAMMERED HELL

What do I say about Harder Than A Hammered Hell? Do I say that the rest of the year is competing for 4 spots ‘cause Harder Than A Hammered Hell is guaranteed to be in my Top 5? Or do I say it’s Essential Listening for your soul, like I did with the Willy Tea Taylor album? Do I say that between this album and his last, Joe Hill’s Ashes, Otis has written more substantial, timeless and quality songs than some of the more popular artists in this little scene of ours ever will? All of those things are completely true but when I really think about this album, the thing I really wanna drive across is its wholeness. There is a completeness and deliberateness to the album that deserves to be recognized beyond some trite “all killer no filler” throw away line. This is an album where I don’t just “never skip a track”. It’s an album that I am an active listener during every one of it’s 11 songs. Harder Than A Hammered Hell makes me wanna be a better (less judgemental/cynical) observer of the life and lives around me, and that’s what I really wanted to say about this album.

You should listen to it. You should listen to all of his albums. Right now.
