Wow. Five years and some 1,800 posts ago, I sat at my computer during a lunch hour penning the first post ever on ninebullets. Since that day we’ve made a few more posts, booked a few shows and sold a few tshirts and koozies.

As is tradition here on 9B, there will be no other posts today and I am hoping to leave work early to grab a beer or two in celebration. See, in the world of the internet, 5 years may as well be a friggin’ lifetime and, to be honest, I am feeling pretty proud of this little website today. In the past few months I’ve brought on a collection of new writers. I feel that’s the natural growth process of the site and I think that they’ll help to grow the focus of the site in the year to come.

Anyhow, happy birthday to us and thank you for coming around and check out the site. Hopefully, we’ll be able to turn you on to new tunes for another 5 years.

If you’re feeling up to it and wanna stoke our collective egos, I’d love to hear about a band that we helped turn you onto in the comments section. Otherwise, we’ll be back to regular postings tomorrow.

I raise this beer to all the bands that make doing ninebullets a worthwhile expenditure of our time.

NQ Arbuckle – Happy Birthday

Ever had one of those albums that you know, had you not been in the right mood when you heard it the first time you wouldn’t have liked it? Well for me Kill County’s The Year Of Getting By is one of those albums. I’d cued it up one afternoon as work was wrapping up so I had to pause it halfway through the first track and didn’t get back to it until the next morning. One could say fate had intervened. The next morning, with a foggy head waiting for its morning dose of coffee, I pressed play and let the album unfold around me.

Kill County is Josh James (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Ringo (banjo, guitar, vocals), Joe Salvti (pedal steel, dobro), Josh Hoyer (piano), Terry McGinn (fiddle), Brad Kindler (drums) and Mark Wolberg (bass), and they come to us out of the Midwest of America. Musically, they’re the cousins of Willard Grant Conspiracy, NQ Arbuckle and Cam Penner, with brooding & heavy songs sung in either a baritone voice or higher plaintive delivery, depending on what the song asks for.

The Year Of Getting By is available on their Bandcamp page for the recession buster price of nothing, so there is no reason for you not to get it.

Kill County – Down To Texas
Kill County – Coffee Black
Kill County – Western Town

Well. I’ll be a motherfucker. I never expected to still be doing these 12 months after the first one but here we are. Furthermore, I feel as though they are an integral part of the site now days. For some reason, I don’t really care to much about the stats for the podcast but today I took a peek at them and according to the stats there are 2500 subscribers to this fucker! I don’t know if that’s a lot or a pathetic number in podcast world but I am pretty sure it’s more people than the average Rays game gets. I hope it’s 5000 by this time next year. With that said, let’s talk about this month’s podcast.

For the one year anniversary I’ve brought y’all, what I feel like, is the best podcast to date from a production standpoint….and musically it’s pretty friggin’ stellar to. I open it with a small collection of happy birthday tracks before settling into a show full of brand new material. We got brand new tracks from The Black Keys, American Aquarium, Red Clay River, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House, Gaslight Anthem and The Morning Pages. Also, in celebration of our birthday, we’re bringing you the best give away the podcast has had to date but to know about that you’re gonna have to actually listen to the damn thing. Another thing that was super cool about this month’s podcast is that there were actually requests from twitter and facebook that ended up getting played. If you have something you wanna hear played follow me on Facebook or Twitter and make a request when I solicit them next month.

As always, below you’ll find the track listing for the show. Please tell your friends and Facebook/Twitter followers about it, I’ll greatly appreciate it.
