Matt Woods “How to Survive” – by Jon Bartel

“God don’t bet on football games,” Matt Woods growls on the opening track of his new record How to Survive, and watching his career over the past few years, it’s obvious he’s not hedging any bets on divine intervention in the music business either. There are few artists who work harder, who tour more relentlessly than Woods, as he searches for, as Bukowski put it, “the next line that finally breaks through, finally says it.” Despite (or maybe because of) the long odds, the snow-piled highways and hills, Woods keeps moving, and this newest record keeps his streak alive, following up 2014’s With Love from Brushy Mountain in a bit gentler but equally powerful fashion.

Due for release on October 7, How to Survive blends Woods’ well-worn, musical stylings with a tenderness that seems to be born from the heart of a man who spends a lot of time alone, wrestling with growing older, grasping for something in that fine, misty space between sweet memory and bitter regret.

Recorded once again at Shed 55 in Knoxville, the album opens with a classic Woods-style tune, “The American Way.” Featuring top-notch lyrical content right from the opening lines (“Some men war in the desert heat / daddy fought hard so his kids could eat / workin’ metal in a mill on Industrial Street / we’re still waiting on his purple heart”) the lead track puts its finger solidly on the pulse of current social issues while ushering in the new collection of songs with some familiar fiddle, stomp and swing that will remind fans of other favorites such as “Company Town” and “Brushy Mountain.”

The second track blazes different trails- titled “Fireflies,” the tune tenderly enshrines an enviable couple as the benchmark for bliss; Woods’ lyrics invite an unnamed counterpart to share that same ethereal (and, judging by the songs that follow, ill-fated) shot at long-term happiness. The chorus flirts cleverly with two conceits: “We’d waltz through the Wintertime / Two-step into Spring / Slowdance with fireflies on Summer nights / Fall in love over again.” While many purveyors of the genre Woods slings sometimes privilege simplicity to a fault, there is no lack of depth here. Combining the classic country-western thematic element of dance-as-life with the eastern, Beat-esque movement of the seasons from birth toward demise, “Fireflies” is arguably the standout track on How to Survive, amongst many contenders. Personally, it puts me in mind of Jason Isbell’s “Flagship;” Woods has created a foil that absolutely stands up both lyrically and aesthetically to that of his songwriting contemporary.

“Bound to Lose,” cuts back to a thread (or a string, if you like, considering the song’s continual references to being “tied up in guitar strings”) that runs through much of the lyrical content on this record- the road. While less apocalyptic than Cormack McCarthy’s vision of it, the road in Woods’ songs is indeed one that runs out into a darkness. Both “Bound to Lose” (co-written with Jeff Shepherd, whose album Woods recently produced) and the next track, “Good Man” deal with the transient nature of the artist; and while the former song resignedly glorifies the pleasures of “old guitars and hotel bars,” the latter sets out a sort of obituary for the man who’s pushed the road to it’s limit, quite literally.

“Good Man” bats cleanup in the album order, and with good reason- the song is a hard-hitter. It’s tough not to pause and reflect on the line “He’s lyin’ there as still as he can be / Lifeless on that shoulder lookin’ just like me / It’s the story of a good man / didn’t have a fighting chance / who made a stand anyway / He never got a headstone / most folks could have never known he passed away.” There’s a wide, populist appeal to the song’s central existential query, but for Woods and those like him trudging across the continent year after year, there’s a real question of legitimacy being raised here. Three records in, Matt seems to be weighing two scales against each other- the traditional metric of monetary success that holds the significant weight of that uniquely disgusting American tabloid cult of (im)personality against that airy bronze plate of the artist and his self-recognized, self-loved, self-loathed, always barroom-bared oversoul. Woods’ existential hero accepts death in a ditch but refuses to see it as an unfit ending; besides, snow melts, and somebody is bound to find the corpse, right?

Bittersweet human relationships and the roads that both bring them together and peel them apart run strong as rivers through the rest of the record. Woods works these themes out in song as it seems he’s worked them over and over in his mind as he moves city to city, bar to bar. As with all of his best work, these songs are deeply personal- he admitted last time I spoke with him that he was a bit afraid that those he wrote for and about would have no difficulty finding themselves in the lyrics, and I suspect he’s right. In “Bedsheets” (a track that will be familiar to those who’ve caught Matt’s live shows over the past couple of years) he longs for a reliving of those most intimate moments of a long relationship defined by separation. “Hang our bedroom sheets out on the line / air out all this lonely we been through,” pleads the chorus; to Woods’ credit, it feels like true regret rather than melancholic posturing; indeed, there are a lot of lines on this record that stand up as particularly authentic, and “Bedsheets” is chock-full of them. “You had my word / even though my hat don’t like to hang at home / knowing that these boots would always make me roam / a heart’s a heavy thing to leave behind” pulls exactly zero punches.

As with Woods himself, it’s not all gloom and regret- “Tonight (Don’t Let Me Down)” is a sly grin in the face what sometimes must feel like a bleak routine of unfamiliar barrooms and strange faces, and there are plenty of foot-tapping arrangements throughout How to Survive that provide a welcome glimpse into the true power of Matt’s songwriting ability- whether it’s just the man himself on stage with his signature tobacco-burst Guild and ice blue eyes hollering past the mic into a suddenly tomb-silent crowd, or the swelling pedal steel, sawmill fiddle and lush, verby telecaster of the full band pouring out the hi-fi, these songs are another step forward for a musician who tries his damndest not to look back for too long. God might not bet on football games, but I’ll bet She sure as hell regrets not preordering this record. You’re gonna love it.

Two Cow Garage Tour Diary Part 3 – Todd Farrell

Great show last night at Zeke’s. First of all, it was a rock and roll BBQ joint, and the food was absolutely killer. I try to kind of eat somewhat healthy on the road, because it’s hard to not eat like shit every meal of the day. Shane and Ryan (Parker, our tour manager) try to eat decent as well. Murph teeters, and Micah lives on a strict diet of cheeseburgers and Little Caesars pizza. Everyone has their fix. At this place, however, I ordered something called “The Four Horsemen” which is basically four kinds of bbq on a hoagie. It was life changing.
Being at a BBQ place, we were a little nervous. We’ve done those shows before, and they can be a bit awkward. Playing to seated folks eating dinner isn’t really a Two Cow environment, and Two Cow isn’t really a listening room band. This place was different though. They got the tables out of there, set up the stage and a hundred or more people showed up at the door. All was wonderful, and it was a great show.
Our Detroit friends Jeremy Porter and the Tucos opened up, and they were absolutely stellar. Their new record is fantastic as well, and all should take notice of it. Wonderful band.
More friends were there as well. Matt Woods, Adam Lee and Jeremy Mackinder all played earlier that night and came to hang with us. Seeing other musicians out on the road is always something special. There’s a certain solidarity in the conversation. Always starts with the “how’s the tour, how are the shows?” talk, but quickly goes into the “how amazing is it that we get to do this?” Quickly. It is. It’s absolutely amazing.
Today we have a day off, so we’re driving to Columbus so everyone can sleep in their own bed (everyone but me, of course). Hoping to see Mad Max tonight. Indianapolis tomorrow.

[ed. note: the following is a note Todd passed onto me about music and musicianship, and I thought it would be a neat bit of inside baseball for you all to see]

We had a really cool discussion in the van today while driving to Columbus. Murph and I are probably the most “schooled” musicians in the band as far as music theory goes. He’s a horn player, so it goes hand in hand with that. I had two years in high school of theory, but I don’t really remember too much, and I never really applied it much to my guitar playing. Micah was a drum line guy in high school (and is actually an amazing drummer, for those who don’t know), and Shane basically learned how to play bass as they were recording Please Turn the Gas Back On. Shane brought up an interesting point though, that he had always listened to music as a songwriter as opposed to a bass player. Since he’s started to listen to music as a bass player, he’s improved, he says. I used to listen to songs as a guitar player, and as a songwriter second. In the last five years, it’s been the opposite, and I sort of abandoned improving at guitar. Being in Two Cow, however, has given me a new urge to get the books and scales out and REALLY learn how to play properly. Murph said the same thing. He’s been drumming for over half his life, but never really learned how to play drums. Rock and roll is a strange and wonderful thing where the emotion is more important than the technique. However, we all want to get better with the actual “playing” part. Murph and I both have this want to hit the books when we get home and really zero in on becoming GOOD players. We do this for a living, and we should take it seriously, we decided. For the first time ever, I want to go home and PRACTICE. Just some random van thoughts.

May 19
Today we found out that the Columbus Replacements show that was cancelled will have not be rescheduled. Two Cow Garage has been perpetually the band of “almost”. I think it’s part of the blue collar, working man charm the band has, but it’s definitely not by design. We were so excited about that show. It would have been the biggest show the band had ever played, opening up for THE band. The Replacements might as well be Led Zeppelin or the Stones. Not that this would have been our big break or anything like that. We know better than to believe that. It would have been a nice moment for us though, the type of thing you tell your grandkids about. Now it’s just another foul tip. Another “almost”. So it goes.
Indianapolis tonight. New day.

So I’ve been working a lot lately, and thinking about work. I’m too exhausted to put much thought into this post, so I’m not going to. I have a lot of feelings about work, and you can find a lot of them in this mixtape.

It has a lot of stuff I really love: starts out with a rare Lucero track, has some live Lee Bains III, good ol’ Tim Barry, and is (I believe) the Ninebullets debut of a little-known artist named Kanye West.

Give it a listen and let me know what you like to have in your ears at work. For me it’s audiobooks, rock operas, and the constant needling of my own self-doubt.

ROMEO SID VICIOUS' – TOP ALBUMS OF 2014

Let me start by saying that 2014 was a great year for music and that once I sat down to make this list I didn’t want to. You see there was so much amazing music last year that I feel like any attempt to sort it all out in to some sort of arbitrary ranking wouldn’t do justice to any of it. So I’m not numbering these, nor will I say anything more than what follows are my favorite releases of 2014. Hell I honestly don’t even know how many there’ll be when I finish!


matt-brushyMatt Woods is one of my favorite people, bar none, on the planet. On top of that he makes amazing music. With Love From Brushy Mountain came out way back in May, 2014 and it hasn’t left my rotation since. It was Michelle’s first and only Essential Listening review and I agree with her assessment. Seriously, if you wrote a top list and this wasn’t on it then I think your list was, at the very least, lacking. On top of all that, Matt is reason I finally got to meet Larry Fulford in real life and, while not an album, that was one of the Top Things that happened to me all year.


calebcoverCaleb Caudle is an artist that I overlooked for way too long. I remedied that this year when I wrote up the initial review for Paint Another Layer On My Heart and I’m glad I did. One of the things that you find when you listen to and write about as much music as we do here is that some albums are good but in a few months they lose something and drop out of your daily rotation, sure you may queue them up sometimes but it’s the harsh truth that there is only so much time in a day to listen to music. For me what shows the true strength of an album, over time, is how long it stays in regular rotation. Well, Mr. Caudle’s record is still my daily rotation seven months later. I’m, pretty sure that says more than I did in my initial consideration.


leebains-dereconstructed-1425pxDereconstructed, in my opinion, was the most important album of 2014. The argument that Lee starts on this release is one that needs to be had. It is no longer time to couch the debate in niceties, we’ve moved beyond that. The attitude that comes through in these songs is how the issues involved need to be addressed. On top of that, because I’m hesitant to say an album is my favorite because I like its politics, I love the production on Dereconstructed. It was divisive and loud and everyone had an opinion on it which brought more ears to the party than a safe approach would have. This one will have a spot in rotations for years to come.


americanthreadI have often said I don’t like politics in my music but I’m thinking I’ll have to revisit that thought. While there aren’t overt politics on this album the plight of the working man is chronicled on Songs Before The War and that honestly shouldn’t be political but is in this country so that makes this a political album whether it was intended to be or not. And I don’t think it was intended to be, I think this was meant to be an album that people could relate to and find some solace in and it succeeds in that very well. The way Brendan writes songs reminds me of some advice that Rilke gave in “Letters To A Young Poet”: If your everyday life seems poor, don’t blame it; blame yourself; admit to yourself that you are not enough of a poet to call forth its riches; because for the creator there is not poverty and no poor, indifferent place. Brendan is quite capable of taking every day life and turning in to art and I think that’s the highest praise I can give any artist.


coverThere are times, and I’m pretty sure I mentioned this in my review, that one just needs some goddamn rock and roll in their life and We Are Already Dead fill that need quite well. This is music you can knock back a tall boy of your favorite beer to and get to that point where you don’t feel any pain. The songs here would be at home on the jukebox in any dive bar that I’ve darkened the door of and some days that’s just what you want to be listening to when your coworker taps you on the shoulder to complain that, even with you wearing your headphones, he can still hear your music.


CAR061Lost & Rootless came in almost under the radar for a lot a people and I even managed to not write about it in a timely manner and that’s a damn tragedy. On this release we get to witness a shift in Tim’s life through the lens of his music. It’s obvious that the changes in his life have shifted his perspective. There are more ditties and fun to be had here than in the past and things are little less dark on this album than on his others. I think this shift started on 40 Miler and I like that it continues here. Even if you’ve never met Tim it’s easy to feel like you know him through his music because he puts so much of himself in to these records, and so as long he keeps releasing them I’ll keep writing about them and I have no doubt they’ll make the year end list every time!


Cory_Branan_-_coverAt this point I think we can refer to Mr. Branan as venerable without being ironic. The No Hit Wonder is just plain good. Cory isn’t one to limit himself, in any aspect, and that quality really shows in his studio work. If you’ve seen him live then you only have half the picture as it’s more than likely you’ve seen him solo as he usually doesn’t have a band with him on tour. To capture the full genius of this man one must listen to his studio work. I know there are some of you out there that wish he’d release an album where all the songs are what you’ve seen at the shows but let’s face it, it ain’t in the cards. I’d love to see that as well but only if we get them with his full vision for the songs as well. I’m really excited to see this one released on Bloodshot and see them supporting his vision for the music. If I had a crystal ball I think it’d predict a live album sometime in the next little bit, that’s nothing official or even from Cory, it’s a just a feeling.


timThat’s right, Tim Barry makes the list twice! I am not always a fan of live albums as a lot of them fail to capture what makes live music so special but Raising Hell & Living Cheap does a fine job of doing what so many other live offerings fail to do. If you’ve never seen Tim live then you this is pretty damn close to the real experience. There’s just something about being able to hear him ramble on about the songs, life, or whatever pops in to his head that makes the live experience special. That goes for most every songwriter, but once you’ve seen Tim, or listened to this one, you’ll understand why it goes double for him.


coverI almost missed Columbia and I’m damn glad I didn’t. The kids in My Life In Black And White didn’t think it would the sort of thing we’d cover. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for a good punk rock album and that’s exactly what this is. I don’t care if you don’t like middle-school punk or if you get in to all the BS of sub-genres and that rot. I’m just going to call this punk and be done with it. I’m also going to listen to it way too loud and make no apologies. I’d advise you to do the same.


TCR_-_coverTo Hell And Back is a screaming rock album that demands one get their ass in gear and it does it with style. This is what and Americans metal band should sound like. It’s only metal in the way that a lot of Americana is punk, by that I mean you can feel the metal roots in the music but these kids have added their own Kentucky take to everything and made it something completely different. Since AIV wrote about these kids I’ve been able to see them live twice, their bassist, Cory Hanks, has married our interviewer extraordinaire Michelle, and I got to hang with Brian Minks at Holiday Hangout. I think it’s safe to say these kids are as much a part of the 9B family as any of the folks that are on staff.


coverNo Salvation is another one of those albums that deals with every day life but this time it’s one that comes from a punk perspective. And as I make this list I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe I’ve just drifted in to a different perspective. I came up on country music and in that era there was a lot of working class themes in country so it’s no surprise that I’ve never really stopped liking those themes, even if I see them from a different perspective than I did when I was young. This is definetly a darker perspective both musically and lyrically but it’s a perspective that needs to be recognized and The Devil’s Cut does a fine job of putting it in front of us without doing anything more than making kick ass music.


Looking back at a year is always a pain in the ass. I know there are other albums that should be on this list, stuff I’m missing, which is why I always hate doing these. But there you have it, my Top Albums of 2014 in no particular order. I always feel like I’ve screwed up these lists because I already told you about these albums, I’ve already written the reviews, called them Essential Listening, or someone on here has, and now I have to say which ones are better than the others. Yet every year I feel obligated to make one of these. Some years I resist and some years I don’t. I failed to resist this year so you get a list…
