TAMPA/ST. PETE: TO DO: ALL FREAKING WEEKEND….

Every now and then a weekend comes along that just makes you shake your head at the awesome. If it weren’t for this being Sober February I’d be shaking my head wondering how I was gonna get through it both physically and financially. Anyhow, for the out of town readers, find an awesome show to go to this weekend and support live music. For my in town readers, I found your shows for you:

THURSDAY NIGHT @ THE ORPHEUM: GREENLAND IS MELTING & TIM BARRY ($10)

In what will be the highlight of the weekend; Tim Barry is coming to town Thursday night and he’s bringing Gainesville’s Greenland Is Melting with him. When I reviewed GiM’s album, Or Hearts Are Gold, Our Grass Is Blue, I said they “sound like what I wanted to hear the first time I heard The Avett Brothers” and I stand by that statement. Live, the fun they’re having is almost palpable and most certainly catching. In other words, this ain’t a show you wanna arrive late to. More to the point, it ain’t a show you wanna miss cause Mr. Barry is bringing his self-help sessions put to song version of acoustic folk rock to the stage. Like I said the other night on ninebullets radio, Tim proves that rock and roll ain’t gotta be fancy guitars, shiny clothes and a bag full of whizbang to captivate an audience. Every time I see him live, I walk away with my belief that a man with good songs and pure intentions can still do something in the music world. So come out, sing along and leave happy.

Tim Barry – Thing Of The Past

FRIDAY NIGHT @ THE RITZ ($15) / SATURDAY @ @ UNIVERSITY LANES ($30): LEBOWSKI FEST

In yet another sign that Tampa/St. Pete might actually be becoming a “real” city, we’ve gotten out own Lebowski Fest! Now, let’s hope like hell that people actually come out to it.

Friday night will feature music by Have Gun Will Travel and Ernie Locke’s (Nervous Turkey) new band, Lambasters with a screening of the movie afterwards. Friday will also feature a guest appearance by the real-life inspiration for The Dude, Jeff “The Dude” Dowd who’s filming a new documentary titled “The Dude.”

Saturday will feature Bowling, Costume, Trivia and other contests at University Lanes from 6-10pm and Jeff Dowd will be there as well.

So go out, imbibe and abide.

SATURDAY NIGHT @ DAVE’S AQUA LOUNGE: “ONE FOR THE ROAD” A FUNDRAISER FOR TAMPA/ST. PETE’S SxSW AUSTIN BOUND BANDS

The best way to directly support your local music scene this weekend is to come out to Dave’s Aqua Lounge for Bammo’s sixth annual “One For The Road” fundraiser. It’s expensive to take time off work, load up in the van and drive out to Austin and back. Sure, you can book shows out there and back if you can get enough time off work but here’s a dirty little secret a lot of people don’t know about SxSW; the bands don’t get paid for the shows they do there. That’s right, the bands will end up spending 4 days playing (sometimes) two shows a day and they’ll do it all for free. Some come out, see some of the best local bands in the area all in one location and do some good while you’re at it. The show starts at 7:00 and features; Sun Society, Ronny Elliott, Rebekah Pulley & TRP, Human Condition, Poetry N Lotion, Have Gun Will Travel & The Beauvilles. Admission is a suggested minumum donation of $10.00 (100% of donations go to the bands). There will also be raffles and all sorts of other funness.

The Beauvilles – Rain
Have Gun Will Travel – Kerosene and Candlelight

TAMPA/ST. PETE: TO DO: THIS WEEKEND: DAVID DONDERO & wHISKEY & CO. @ NEW WORLD and HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL @ ELLA'S

This time last year I was in total panic mode trying to get everything right for the wife’s 30th Birthday. This year we’re back to the annual Halloween Party and Erin has more help than she knows what to do with, so I am free to get my rock shows on. So let’s talk rock and roll this weekend….

Thursday night we have David Dondero, Whiskey and Co. and Christina Wagner kicking the Halloween weekend off at New World Brewery. David Dondero is probably best known to locals here for the following lyrics from “South of the South”; “so I jumped my pogo stick all the way to Ybor City where they burned up a couple blocks and to me seemed like a pity that was once a Cuban district and a center for the arts / was now a mall like atmosphere homogeneous and insincere they burned its heart right out down South of the South”. Fans of Bright Eyes will drop maps of Hawaii all over the place over this guy, while Whiskey and Co. have plenty of drug and whiskey-laden country songs to keep spirits high and heads higher. Oh, by the way…did I mention that this is a ninebullets.net / thxmgmt collaborative show? Well, it is. In the interest of honesty I have to say we’re (9b.net) really just riding on the coat tails of thx, but I am really happy they offered up said coat tails. I’m telling you, I want 2k10 to be the year 9b takes the next step and I’m hoping thx is gonna help us do it.

Whiskey & Co. – Nightlife
Whiskey & Co. – One Man (too many)

David Dondero – Rothko Chapel
David Dondero – Twenty Years
David Dondero – We’re All Just Babies In Our Mama’s Eyes

Saturday night is Halloween night, and like I said earlier we’re throwing a big ol’ party. If you live in Tampa / St. Pete and wanna attend…holler at me, I’ll give you the particulars.

Sunday afternoon everyone’s gonna have the same thing on their mind….last night’s revelry, and I’m sure that shit is gonna hurt. Everyone knows the best cure for a hangover is a little hair of the dog, and a little rock and roll music just helps the liquor work its magic quicker. Well fancy that, one of the prides of the local music scene, Have Gun Will Travel, will be playing at Ella’s Americana Folk Art Cafe’ for Sunday brunch and BBQ. HGWT will actually be playing a lot around town in the coming weeks/months as they support their upcoming (released in Nov.) album, Postcards From The Friendly City. Have Gun deserves your attention, and that goes for every out of town reader of this site, too. These kids write great songs and it very well might become my personal mission to make sure every single one of you hear their new album. It’s on par with every other Americana album you’ve purchased this year. I promise.

TAMPA/ST. PETE: TO DO: FRIDAY NIGHT: MOJO GURUS CD RELEASE PARTY @ DAVE'S AQUA LOUNGE

Way back in the beginning of ninebullets I wrote a piece about the band Roxx Gang. There was a period in the late ’80’s I thought they were quite simply the bees knees.

Flash forward 20 years or so and former Roxx Gang frontman, Kevin Steele’s, new band, Mojo Gurus is celebrating the release of their new disc, Let’s Get Lit With. The Mojo Guru’s are, Kevin Steele, Vinnie Granese, Doc Lovett and Mark Busto and they’ve just signed a multi-album deal with True North Records. Along with Let’s Get Lit True North will be reissuing the Guru’s first two cd’s, Hot Damn and Shakin’ the Barn on March 24. To celebrate the occasion the Mojo Gurus are throwing a big ol’ party at Dave’s Aqua Lounge and you’re all invited. Joining them will be another one of Tampa’s shining lights, Tailgunner Joe and The Earls of Slander.

Let’s Get Lit features 13 tracks of straight forward southern rock meets a fifth of whiskey produced by Jody Gray at Pro Star Recording. The press release describes the music as “bourbon-soaked, gut bucket, glam meets twang” and I couldn’t really improve upon that. It’s rock and roll for the sake of sex, drugs and rock and roll. The world can be saved tomorrow.

So come out, get drunk, support your local music scene and buy some music.
