NINEBULLETS.NET PODCAST: EPISODE 23

How y’all doing? It’s been a little while since we did one of these. I wish I had a real excuse but, to be honest, I don’t. I felt the pressure of doing a weekly radio show and as a result, the podcast got pushed to the background. Well, that’s not the case any longer and with that said, let’s focus on this show and not the missed shows of the past few months.

Once again out good friend from the Northwest, Lollyrae, sent us some beers and I went to drinking them during the podcast. You may remember that we did this once before and I was a little mixed on the results. While I did not get slurring drunk during this show I think I did a much better job describing the beers and making the trying of the beers a part of the show. I hope y’all think so too.

Speaking of the show. We’ve lots of good new stuff as well as some tunes you’re probably already quite familiar with. The show opens with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Refugee” by The Gaslight Anthem that I think rivals the original. Some of the other standout tracks include; Merle Haggard proving he still has it, Hellbound Glory showing there’s more to them than drug songs, Have Gun Will Travel showing there will be no sophomore slump with Mergers & Acquisitions, Shooter Jennings sending the pop country boys a message and Scott Hiram Biram doing what he does so well.

All that’s left is to press play on the music. So get to it and as always, if you like what you’re hearing on these podcasts, tell your friends about it. Post about it on your Facebook wall. Tweet about it. These bands are all pretty small so every new ear their music find counts, and you can directly assist them in that effort by telling people about this podcast and others like it.

TOP 5: CAR SONGS

TOP 5 CAR SONGS

To continue on with the transportation theme (two out of the last three top 5’s have been about transportation) this weeks theme is car songs. These can be any songs about cars and there are a lot of songs about cars out there to choose from. I didn’t go deep this week and just picked the first five that popped in to my head. It shouldn’t be a hard little list to make for anyone. Anyway here’s my list:

ALL – Hot Rod Lincoln | This is just a bad ass cover!
Cross Canadian Ragweed – Highway 377 | I have a soft spot for songs about Jesus and the Devil and this one includes cars?!? Awesome!
Chris Knight – My Old Cars | For so many reasons this reminds me of my best friend An-G.
Drive By Truckers – Daddy’s Cup | While my daddy wasn’t a race car driver there’s so many things that “I won’t stop until Daddy’s name is on that cup” even as old as I am!
Two Cow Garage – Camaro | What this song brings to mind depends on the day but right now it reminds me of picking up a girl who wasn’t allowed to see me, yes in a Camaro, and taking her to the Rocky Horror Picture Show and making it in the backseat on the way there. It was a friend’s Camaro…

I really wanted to drop in Stroker Ace but honestly it would have come in around number 9 or 10 so it gets left out of my list. I’ve showed you mine now let’s see yours!

AUTOPSY IV ANSWERS: I’m gonna be honest. I resisted the temptation and curated my list without googling “songs about cars” so I probably missed some seriously obvious shit. That said, here is the list I came up with:

White Zombie – Black Sunshine: I wanted this to be Nitrous Burning Funny Cars by The Dead Milkmen but I opted against listing the same artist twice. Still, an awesome song with some great samples.

The Dead Milkmen – Bitchin’ Camaro: One of the first songs that came to mind. Bitchin’ Camaro Bitchin’ Camaro I Ran Over My Neighbor!

Mat D – Ford Marriage: I friggin’ love this song.

The Bean Pickers Union – Independence Day: This song is as much about cruising a small town as it is about a car but it’s included here for it’s mention of a 327 Small Block engine…the very engine that will be in the Camaro I own one day.

Sir Mix-A-Lot – Testarossa: First song I thought of and quite simply the beginning and the end when it comes to the subject of car songs.

TOP 5: TRAIN SONGS

When RomeoSidVicious mentioned that we hadn’t done train songs yet I was as surprised as him. I mean, after drinking songs and murder ballads I bet train songs are the most prevalent in the country & blues world. So, today is as good a day as any to remedy this gaping hole in the Top 5 theme.

I tried to avoid the obvious selections so there would be some easy one’s for y’all:

Johnny Cash – Orange Blossom Special: Okay, this one is obvious but come one…it’s trains, it’s Florida. I had to list it.

Love and Rockets – Bound For Glory: One of my favorite bands that rarely gets mentioned on here performing one of my favorite songs by them.

Chris Knight – Speeding Train: I’ve said it one and I’ll say it now. If you don’t like Chris Knight then there is obviously a horrific flaw somewhere in your makeup.

The Cult – Medicine Train: There is definitely some hearing damage in me as a direct result of playing this song to the edge of the 6×9’s in my 1973 Dodge Colt’s abilities.

Quad City DJ’s – C’mon N’ Ride It: Simply put…the greatest train song in the history of the world so you know….If you feel like dancin’ well come on, it’s up to you. Move your arm up and down and make that choo choo sound.

NINEBULLETS.NET OCTOBER 2009 BEER/PODCAST:

Well, well, well, here it is. The first themed podcast and we decided to do the dual (collab, if you will) themes of Murder Ballads and Beer. The murder ballads came from y’all’s emails and my admittedly shit memory, while the beer came from Rogue Brewery courtesy our Portland friend Lollyrae. I hope I did okay, but I have to admit I am lacking a little confidence on this one. I think the main problem is that I wasn’t too sure how I was gonna do it before I started it, then I realized midway through that I needed to cut it off due to file size and my podcast host. That said, a couple more of these and I think I could have it down to an art…not that it matters. This bad boy is done, so let’s talk about it.

As I said, this month’s podcast features murder ballads and devil songs. I had asked for people to email me their suggestions and got enough songs that I could have done a two hour show, and that’s before I put in the songs I wanted to include. THEN, to add more time, I had all that wonderful (and some not so wonderful) beer to talk about! I’m really curious to know if y’all think it turned out very good. If I didn’t include your song, it’s probably not because I didn’t like it, I just ran out of time. Hopefully, next month we’re gonna be doing another one of these featuring Florida bands and Florida craft beers.

Y’all have a happy Halloween and check back here tomorrow for a Strawfoot giveaway. Til’ then, here is the tracklisting for this month’s show, please tell your friends and Facebook/Twitter followers about it. I’ll greatly appreciate it.

NINEBULLETS.NET AUGUST PODCAST:

Here we are. Another month, another podcast. Can you believe it’s been 6 months? Traffic on these is improving a little and that’s raised my spirits about doing them…I know I’m supposed to be all about doing them regardless of the amount of people who listen….and I will be, just as soon as the podcast’s monthly traffic gets in the same neighborhood as ninebullets.net’s daily traffic. That said, let’s talk about this month’s podcast.

The moment I sat down and started mapping out what songs I wanted to play this month I started getting excited. It quickly became obvious that this month’s song selection was gonna be the bomb. We got unreleased tracks from The Fox Hunt, Left Lane Cruiser, Carolyn Mark, Malcolm Holcombe, Pete Bernhard (Devil Makes Three) and Chuck Ragan, as well as newborn songs from Chad Price (Drag The River), Mat d. and the Profane Saints, The Builders and The Butchers, The Takers and Lonesome Wyatt (Those Poor Bastards) w/Rachel Brooke.

In the middle of the show I decided to do a set featuring bands who will be performing at Suburban Home‘s 14 Anniversary Weekend Party, which I’ll be attending in 15 days. Hopefully I’ll come back from it with some good stories, good pictures and a few interviews.

And that does it. I’m really happy with this month’s podcast and I think y’all will like it. Do me a favor, though. If you listen and you enjoy the show, please tell other people about it.

Thanks, everyone. ~Autopsy IV (twitter: @autopsy4)

CHRIS KNIGHT – TRAILER TAPES II

Chris Knight was admittedly surprised at the public’s reaction to the raw recordings of The Trailer Tapes. I’m not sure why, this genre has a fan base that prides itself as much on unreleased demos recorded on a Radio The Shack cassette recorder as it does the latest proper album release.

While Trailer Tapes II is technically a sequel to The Trailer Tapes, it differs at its core. See, while Trailer Tapes was a raw collection of songs that were largely unreleased, Trailer Tapes II features the original Chris-and-an-acoustic stripped-down versions of what ultimately became some of Chris’ most popular songs. These recordings spawn from that same summer recording session in 1996 featuring a recently signed, but still unknown Chris Knight that birth to The Trailer Tapes, taking place inside a singlewide trailer in Kentucky.  When asked about the tracks on Trailer Tapes II, Chris had this to say, “I’ve been playing most of these songs every night on the road for the past 12 years. I know I sing 2 of them way different now than when I did then. What you’re hearing is a guy who had written those songs at his kitchen table and barely knew how to sing them into a microphone. Still, there are moments where I can hear the beginning of what I do now.”

I’ll admit that Trailer II doesn’t quite possess the same power that The Trailer Tapes did, but Chris at 3/4 power is better than many folks at full throttle. And even on Trailer II, when it’s on there are few better.
