Somewhere on the rock and roll highway there is a bar. This bar is like a scene out of a Quentin Tarantino-meets-Wes Anderson film. In this bar they only drink flavored martinis, the women wear elbow length gloves and pointy glasses, and everyone smokes their cigarettes with cigarette holders.

This bar has a jukebox that plays hits that crackle across the bar’s speakers. The hip kids bob their heads while the irreverent one’s dance like nobody is watching. Over time this jukebox has seen many hits from the likes of Eilen Jewell, Carolyn Mark and Samantha Crain, but lately it’s been a spectacle wearing girl and her backing band out of Portland, Oregon that has had the kids all aflutter. They seemingly can’t get enough of this band’s country folk meets jazz and soul sound, as they’ve been using it as the soundtrack for their young loves, first kisses, momentarily debilitating heartbreaks and sweaty dance floors.

That was my first (and it will be my only) attempt to put the feeling of an album into words. Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside’s debut album, Dirty Radio, needs to be in your record collection. It’s Essential Listening, so listen and see if I did the feeling of the album any justice.

  1. links aren’t working

  2. I think you review did the album justice. The image you described fits the music almost too well! I like the how she really gives it to computer music in Dirty Radio. It’s great to hear a real band playing real songs.
