I live in San Antonio and we have a great radio station that specializes in Texas country music and you can stream it live online.

Don’t pay attention to how the website looks. It’s an offshoot of the big mainstream country station here so it looks lame. Just stream it. Whoever programs the Outlaw is a genius. You can only pick up the actual station broadcast in the city limits here. I guarantee Ninebullets fans will love the station. Just stream it and thank cheesy country music for making so much money for KJ97 that they can have a station that only plays good music. They also play Drive By Truckers and other real country music. “If Kevin Chesney ever writes a good song we’ll play it.” is one of their station bumpers.

I’ve been an REK fan ever since I heard “Road Goes on Forever” for the first time in 1996. He’s awesome and a really good guy as well if you ever have the chance to meet him.

I’ve seen him a dozen times and the best show is always his December 30 (“New Year’s Eve Eve”) show at the Bass Hall in Fort Worth, TX. I’ve been every year since ‘05 and it’s amazing. Doesn’t get much better than REK.

Another Texas artist that I really like is Jack Ingram but you have to check out his earlier stuff (the more recent songs are a little too “Nashvilly” for me). “Biloxi” is his best song IMO. If you listen to one of his songs do yourself a favor and make it that one.

RSV, glad to see you bringing this stuff to 9b. The Texas/Red Dirt scene has some really good acts that I think a lot of people that read 9b will like.

Undone, the REK tribute album is pretty awesome. Chris Knight gets the honors for the title track. Would love to hear a Red Dirt primer. Cross Canadian Ragweed is my guilty pleasure.

Reckless Kelly rocks as does the singer’s brother’s band. I love me some Charlie Robison but haven’t heard of Josh Abbot and will go look him up. I also dig The Jackson Taylor Band, Max Stalling, Roger Creager, Stoney LaRue, Dub Miller, and a lot more. I am going to start an intro to TX/Red Dirt music series soon and we’ll see how that turns out.

Just to throw another “Texas Country” act out there that seems to get overlooked check out Reckless Kelly, and the Charlie Robison (a must)and Josh Abbott band, and you wont be dissapointed. Cheers!
