I do not know too much about Omaha’s McCarthy Trenching. Over the past five years he has played and toured with Mayday, Neva Dinova, The Good Life, Orenda Fink, Maria Taylor, Bright Eyes and many others. Now he is stepping out on his own with his self-titled release from Team Love records. With half the songs being culled from his 2003 demo “Old Habits”, that was recorded in a basement in a since demolished house, and the remaining tracks coming from his 2006 release “It’s Got Nothing to do with Drinking” sessions. What we end up with is 13 tracks of drinking, highways, and women. Well-worn subjects to be sure, but his writing and song structure is what makes the songs so comfortable, like a favorite tshirt.

I may not know too much about McCarthy Trenching, but I do know this: Next time I am in need of some dark room, glass of whiskey and feelin’ sorry for myself time, I have found a perfect soundtrack.
