Son of Perdition can be found in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 and John 17:12 and is a name commonly associated with the Antichrist and the biblical term of the Devil’s Advocate mentioned in 1 and 2 John.
Son of Perdition is also well known as a term used by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes referred to as Mormons) to describe a person who will not take any part in the glory of God in the afterlife.
The first time I ever heard of Sons of Perdition was via the following quote which was posted to Hank III’s message board by the ever loathsome Lonesome Wyatt of Those Poor Bastards:
You can’t just listen to one or two songs off it though. You’ve just gotta sit there with a bloody bible pressed to your heart and listen to it all the way through. It’s one of the most original and doomed country records to come out since “Satan is Real.” It’s also kinda like “Your Funeral, My Trial” era Nick Cave if he decided to sing some western music. A goddamn masterpiece.
After an endorsement like that from one of the masters of the whole country-goth sound, he may as well have put the album in my cd player. There was no way in hell I wasn’t gonna get these “thirteen songs seeped in sinners’ blood and scorched by the wrath of god“.
Sons of Perdition is basically Denton, Texas resident snake oil salesman Zebulon Whaley, with the musical help of friends and enemies alike. “The Kingdom is on Fire” is his debut cd, following on the heels of the heavily praised, vengeance obsessed dirge Anhelo, which appeared on the Gravewax Record’s compilation “Yells from the Crypt”. This definitely is not the cd you wanna listen to the night your woman leaves you and you’re sitting at home with a sharp axe and a half empty bottle of whiskey. Dirges of revenge, suicide, god and satan alike, and the human spirit in the most honest of lights. The cd almost seems to be divided into 2 parts, opening with the slow descent into hell and followed by the redemptive march back to the glory of god. If David Lynch ever makes a movie with a scene from a Tennessee revival tent, then The Sons of Perdition will have to fill that slot on the soundtrack. If you are a fan of Those Poor Bastards or The Pine Box Boys, you need to check this fella out.
