FEEL BAD FOR YOU MIX TAPE: AUGUST EDITION:

The August installment of the Feel Bad For You Mixtape is up and streaming. The FBFY mixtape has entered a new segment of it’s life moving from a message board tape curated by Ms. Rockstar Aimz, of My Aimz Is True, to a mixtape put together by a collection of (mostly) like minded bloggers. You can stream it below and head over to the official FBFY mixtape web site for some dialog on why each song was selected.

This month’s mix has a theme; The Man. To quote Aimz, “The dogs days of summer are only made worse by sitting in your cubicle and slaving away for THE MAN! At least that’s how I came up with the theme for the August Feel Bad For You Mixtape. Though THE MAN could be your boss, the government, whitey, your woman, Nashville record executives, your landlord, etc. I told the contributors to be creative with this one.” Last night, when the tape went live folks even managed to get the hashtag #fbfy trending on twitter. So, if you have a tweet you wanna make about the mix, make sure and use the tag.

A 9b CHRISTMAS COMPILATION: HO HO HUMBUG

This has become a tradition of sorts for me, making a Christmas compilation, and this year I am actually pretty darn proud of it. Yes it’s a mix of some damn sad songs and it might even be considered depressing but there’s actually a reason for it. This year I finally figured out why Christmas music, which is generally happy and cheerful, makes me want to stab people in the face. First, you must understand that I am actually religious. I know some of you aren’t but please note I don’t push it down anyone’s throat and aside from seasonal affective disorder I actually enjoy Christmas these days. What I hate is the same thing I hate about Valentine’s Day: Commercialism. This is why I have come to despise the more traditional holiday songs. They’re shouted at me ad nauseum in every retail outlet I enter whether it’s an eatery or God forbid a department store. The traditional songs, and some of them are pretty amazing from a composition standpoint, have been co-opted to try and get me to buy more stuff. The retail industry wants me in a good mood so I will drag out my wallet and give them more money and their use of music to do that has ruined it for me. So every year I try to discover some new non-traditional Christmas music and make a mix. This year it all ended up being sad. Yes, there’s some kitsch here but it’s sad kitsch. There are also some classics in there as well. My favorite find this year was Christmas In A Chinese Restaurant which pretty much blew my mind. So I hope you enjoy this mix and the spirit in which I mean it. I don’t aim to make you depressed but hopefully give you an alternative to the classics that, for me, are now no longer welcome. Be sure to let me know what you think in the comments.
