30 DAY SONG CHALLENGE: DAY 5:

So, I’ve decided to do this facebook 30 Day Song Challenge (you can see previous days here)thing and I figured I’d do it here on ninebullets. Feel free to contribute your thoughts in the comments section. So, without further ado:

DAY 05: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU THINK OF SOMEONE:

Anytime I listen to the album Sexplosion! by the Thrill Kill Kult (and I do a few times a year still) it reminds me of my friend Maura. She gave me the copy of an album on the b-side of an old 90 minute tape when we were kids and I fell in love with the album.

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult – Martini Built For 2

So, let’s see it….what’s a song that reminds you of someone?

DAY 04: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU SAD:

Ever since Brian explained the origins of this song I don’t even listen to it anymore. It’s incredibly sad and I sometimes feel like an asshole for listening to it.

Lucero – Darby’s Song

So, how about you? You got any songs that make you sad?

DAY 03: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY:

After two pretty hard (read: impossible) days I was really happy to see this on Friday. For me this one is a no brainer. The entire They Might Be Giants pink album could have been used here but it’s a song not an album challenge and there is one song on this album that makes me smile every time I hear, think about or sing it:

They Might Be Giants – Number Three

And you? What a song that makes you happy on this particular Friday?

DAY 02: YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SONG:

This one, really, is as impossible as Day 1: Your Favorite Song. It probably would have been better to have added a (right now) to the ends of both of them. At least, that’s what I thought when I started marinating on my “least favorite song”. Then, as I sat there listing songs I hated (a list that could go to the ends of time probably) I wrote down a track that I immediately knew was the one that this challenge was asking for from me. When this song is playing I literally get angry that I am having to hear it:

Bauhaus – Bela Lugosi’s Dead

Gah! Rage. Hate!
So, what’s your “least favorite song”?

30 DAY SONG CHALLENGE: DAY 1:

So, I’ve decided to do this facebook 30 Day Song Challenge thing and I figured I’d do it here on ninebullets. Feel free to contribute your thoughts in the comments section. So, without further ado:

DAY 01: YOUR FAVORITE SONG:

My initial thought; “gimmie a fucking break.”

There is no way on earth I could settle on a “favorite song”. Hell, I tried but the process proved to be far more difficult and frustrating than I could have imagined so I took the easy way out. I just looked at my Lastfm stats and decided to use the song I’d played the most and as it turns out, I am very happy with that selection:

Scott H. Biram – Long Fingernail

What’s your most listened to song?

THE BACK ROW BAPTISTS – BROKEN HEARTS & BAD DECISIONS

The Back Row Baptists were brought to my attention via some of my fellow Twitter tweeters a few months back, and after a few mishaps one of their new cds, Broken Hearts & Bad Decisions, landed in my mailbox. For a while I really didn’t think I liked the album very much but after a few passes I realized that there was just a 4 song stretch (tracks 4 thru 7) in the middle of the cd that I really didn’t like. I deleted them and found a new band that I am digging the hell out of.

The Back Row Baptists come out of Birmingham, Alabama and consist of Chris Porter, Sarah Green, Heath Green, Susan Nuckols, Adam Guthrie and Jay Taylor. Where I come from, Southern Baptists are everywhere. Besides being bat shit crazy they are also one of the most judgemental cults you’ll ever run across (but at least they don’t rape little boys like those pesky Catholics). I tell you this because I’ve always heard the term “back row Baptist” used as a descriptor for a Southern Baptist who drinks, gambles and commits other hell-worthy offenses, of which Southern Baptists have more than the day is long. Now, I don’t know if that’s where the band pulled the term from, but I am pretending that it is.

Their bio describes their music as “uniquely Southern” and “outlaw gospel”. In this era of internets, cable tv and increased homogeneity, I’m not quite sure what “uniquely Southern” really means anymore, but I can damned sure get on board with the “outlaw gospel” descriptor. Another one of my fellow twitter tweeters called them, “a Birmingham version of American Aquarium”. It was a comparison that I had not even thought of, but damned if a revisit to the album didn’t prove it to be dead on. Both bands write real songs about real people (literally) and real situations. However, The Back Row Baptists do it with a lot more of a country flair. One might say Chris Porter’s voice sounds a little like a young pre-years of road abuse Ben Nichols while his inflection could be the brother of BJ Barham’s. I’m also told they’re one hell of a fun band to see live, so I just might have to put on my show promoter hat and get them down here to Florida.

WHAT NOT TO BUY: SHOOTER JENNINGS AND HIEROPHANT – BLACK RIBBONS

What not to buy: Shooter Jennings & Hierophant – Black Ribbons
Why?: Kid Rock’s already done it…but better.
Okay, that’s pretty bad but seriously; why?: I live tweeted my thoughts as I listened to the album the first time. Let’s read them shall we?

@autopsy4: “Wake Up” the opening track of new Shooter Jenning’s album sounds like something an angst ridden highschool kid would have wrote.
@autopsy4: 4th song from new Shooter…disjointed. boring. again, lyrically juvenile.
@autopsy4: wait….there’s a song on here titled, “Fuck You I’m Famous” & it’s exactly what you’d think. What. A. Douche.
@autopsy4: “The Breaking Point” from new Shooter sounds like a rejected Kid Rock song…
@autopsy4: re: New Shooter Jennings album…I feel a “What Not To Buy” post in my future.
@autopsy4: “God Bless Alabama” from new Shooter is definitely chasing the Kid Rock crowd.
@autopsy4: “All of This Could Have Been Yours” was almost descent if Shooter would have just shut up at the end.
@autopsy4: “Light In The Sky” from new Shooter. Honestly, not a bad track. Reminds me of Red Hot Chili Peppers in a way.
@autopsy4: “Black Ribbons” okay, I see what he was trying to do…make a huge ballad thing is, it ended up being too whiny and then came the whistle…
@autopsy4: The opening of “Summer of Rage” makes me wanna listen to “The Final Countdown”
@autopsy4: “California Via Tennessee” man, how do those Kid Rock rejects taste?
@autopsy4: did I hear Auto-Tune on “The Illuminated”….::rewinds:: YES! Yes I did.
@autopsy4: i wonder how many times the word “epic” was muttered while working on The Illuminated.
@autopsy4: and….we’re done. My suggestion is to not buy the new Shooter. It’s his worst to date and I’m sure it’ll make him a million dollars.
@autopsy4: in closing I’d like to say, Shooter…..your Daddy was famous. Not you.

So there you go. I think one of the folks who follows me on twitter summed it up best when he said, “The kid tries too hard.” To me, this album is an obvious attempt to cash in…on something. If this thing fails commercially, what trend/sound do you think Shooter will try to gravy train next? I don’t know if he ever managed to put that “o” back in country, but he is definitely bringing the “it” to sucks.

For some reason today I’ve been feeling kind of nostalgic and as a result I’ve been jamming tunes from back when I was a little indutrial music club kid.
