30 DAY SONG CHALLENGE: DAY 15:

DAY 15: A SONG THAT DESCRIBES YOU:

We’re officially at the 1/2 point of this Lose Weight Exercise and it’s asking for a song that describes me. At first I wanted to post Corporate Slave by Snog but I realized that more than anything that was just me lashing out at my current situation so it was back to the drawing board. Well. Not really. This one was easy. Old Sad Songs by Lucero is a conversation that’s played out in my house more than a few times. While I do love the Lucero version I love this Jon Snodgrass cover of it even more.

Jon Snodgrass – Old Sad Songs

Your turn.

DAY 14: A SONG NO ONE WOULD EXPECT YOU TO LOVE:

Anyone who knows me in real life for any length of time has probably been forced to listen to me rant about how much I despise The Cure. Given that, I doubt anyone would expect me to love their song “Hot Hot Hot!!!”.

The Cure – Hot Hot Hot!!!

How about you? Two weeks in. You sticking with me? What’s a track no one would expect you to love?

DAY 13: A SONG THAT IS A GUILTY PLEASURE:

Guilty Pleasure is defined as, “something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The “guilt” involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one’s lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes.

I do not like Hootie & The Blowfish but I do like this song. And unlike liking The Eagles, Jimmy Buffet, Katy Perry or VH1 Reality TV…..I do find it embarrassing.

Hootie & The Blowfish – Be The One

Now. Fess up bitches. What’s your guilty pleasure?

DAY 12: A SONG FROM A BAND YOU HATE:

A band I hate? You may as well have given me a rock, put me in a dingy in the middle of the Atlantic and asked me to hit water. My brain almost locked up from the excess of choices but then, as they say, the curdled cream rose to the top.

U-fucking-2.

I hate U2. I find their music boring. I find Bono to be insufferable and Edge’s playing to be heartless. There is nothing about this band (or this song) that I like.

U2 – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

So how about you? You’re in a dingy in the middle of the Atlantic….hit water.

DAY 11: A SONG FROM YOUR FAVORITE BAND:

I had to do a few minutes of soul searching on this one. Lucero or Two Cow Garage, Lucero or Two Cow Garage, Lucero or Two Cow Garage….In the end, while Two Cow is in the running, Lucero still has the title of “My Favorite Band”.

Lucero – I’ll Just Fall

So, who’s your favorite band?

DAY 10: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU FALL ASLEEP:

There are two ways to take today’s topic…are they asking for a song that bores you to sleep or a song that comforts and calms you to sleep? Since I have no idea who made the original list I am using for these posts I’ll go with the latter…

To be honest, I have not played music when I was going to sleep in years. Having two bulldogs who snore like it’s an Olympic sport necessitates using a white noise machine when we sleep but there was a time before bulldogs when I could sleep with music and in that long past era I had a Sarah McLachlan (don’t laugh) mix that I would play every night when I was going to bed.

Sarah McLachlan – Building A Mystery

So. What’s your bedtime musical choice?

DAY 09: A SONG THAT YOU CAN DANCE TO:

You can, in all honesty, dance to any song. Perhaps this one should have been “a song you can dance well to” but then, some people can not dance well at all. Personally, I am going with a sang I enjoy(ed) dancing too.

The bulk of my dancing happened in the local goth/industrial clubs here in Florida so I knew from the get go that I was gonna be choosing from that era of songs for this one so I made a quick list of the songs I most enjoyed dancing to back then. Then, I simply picked the one that, if I had to dance today, I’d most wanna dance to and that became my choice:

Die Warzau – Suck It Up

So, what do you wanna hear when you’re feeling the need to cut a rug? Hope it ain’t this one.

DAY 08: A SONG THAT YOU KNOW ALL THE WORDS TO:

There are lots and lots and lots of songs that I know all the words to….when they’re playing. Songs I can just outright recite the words to on command. Not so many if any but I do have a good story when it comes to knowing all the words to a song.

When I was a kid (thinking 8-10 range) I decided than I needed to know all the words to a song. At first, I tried to learn all the words to Hall & Oates “Private Eyes” but it was proving difficult since I didn’t own it so I set my eyes on a cong from the one album I owned at the time, Kenny Rogers, The Gambler. So I got out my little Emerson record player and went to learning.

It took about 3 days but I was eventually able to recite every a cappella and I was quite proud of myself.

Kenny Rogers – The Gambler

How about you? What’s the first song you learned all the words to?

DAY 07: A SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF A CERTAIN EVENT:

This one is easy. When I turned 16 I was unleashed upon the world with a 1800 pound torpedo (car) and a license to man it. Well, as 16 year olds are prone to do, I drove it at high speeds while listening to music at high volumes. And, as 16 year olds are also prone to do, one night, whilst driving at a very high rate of speed and listening to music at high volumes, I attempted to occupy a space that was already occupied by another car.

The collision itself has been saved in my memory in as a collection of snapshots rather than a moving memory. Car, brakes, collision, other car’s rear wheels up on the hood of my car, broken brake lights, bloody hand, smoke from skidding tires and then stillness. I was in a complete daze and confused having never been in a car accident but I clearly remember that when I went back to get the keys out of the car the tape player was dutifully playing this song at very high volume. Now, whenever I hear the song I think back to that night and remember how amazed I was that the tape player was still playing like nothing had even happened.

The Violent Femmes – Add It Up

What song reminds you of a certain event?

DAY 06: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU THINK OF SOMEWHERE:

When I read this one I started marinating on songs that reminded me of places but as kept thinking I realized that, for me, songs and albums remind me of stations in life as often as they do specific places. Sometimes, dusting off an album from 15 years ago is like sitting down and drinking a beer with the person you used to be. When I looked at today’s challenge from that angle, the list grew exponentially but one immediately made me smile so that’s the one I chose to share with y’all today.

There was a couple of years span when I was in high school (and just out of) where we went to Rocky Horror every single weekend. I’d get off from my job as a busboy, ride by and ppick up my friend Maura (who’d snuck out), swing by and pick up my buddy Chris (who’d snuck out) and we’d meet a couple other friends (who may or may not have snuck out) and we’d head out to Tampa for the midnight showing. Chris and I would try and come up with new lines in hopes they’d catch on with the crowd. That era, for me, was probably childhood’s last gasp but it was a great time. I went to the local showing of Rocky a year or so ago. Sadly, I’ve forgotten most of the lines and a lot of the magic was gone but I was happy to see a full house and a new collection of kids doing the Time Warp.

Rocky Horror Picture Show – Sweet Transvestite

So, how about you. What’s a song that reminds you of somewhere and what’s the story?
