Last time I mentioned Lucero’s (but mostly Ben) participation in the MTV reality (but not really) show, 5 Dollar Cover: Memphis it got alot of comments both good and bad.
For those asking what the fuck I’m typing about right now I’ll explain a little. 5 Dollar Cover, Memphis was written and directed by Craig Brewer (who wrote and directed Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan). The project is made up of a feature-length web-series by Memphis filmmakers and twelve documentaries on the bands in the series produced and directed by Alan Spearman. For more information on the project go here.
Whether it’s good or bad for Lucero to be involved in this project, and more specifically MTV, is really a matter of personal opinion (that should be aired in this posts comment section) but I wanted to mention that some videos featuring Ben and the band have been posted.
One is a performance of San Francisco from the show. The other is a short-film featuring Ben waxing about the pull of the road versus the pull of a woman back home. Watch them and lemme know what you think.

Man, I’m fine with all this. I got annoyed last time at some of the commenters bemoaning this as the death of a great indie band. Who gives a crap if he wants to act? He can go do romantic comedies with J-Lo for all I care, as long as Lucero continues to be a great band. If the next album (on a major label for all you haters) comes out and is as rockin’ as the last couple have been, then he can go be the next boy toy on The Hills adn i’ll be just fine. It’s a friggin’ MTV youtube clip, it isnt Dylan going electric.

If you check the website there’s another video of Ben talking about his lack of acting skills and making out with the actress who plays his girlfriend.
I think it’s pretty entertaining regardless of what affect it has on the fanbase. Maybe it’ll push them to get that new album out a little sooner.

I can’t wait till I get home and see these vids to start “bemoaning”.

I’m the dude in plaid with the black hat in the front row of San Francisco (drunk as hell)!
Thanks for posting!

im not gonna lie that video of ben might have changed me on this whole thing. 20 acres and a cabin. the thing about lucero and bens solo album is that it hits super close to home. girl problems and coming home from work with dirt under my nails. so when i saw that they were workin with the devil i was pissed. but that shit made me feel like the first time i listened to the self titled album. so im just gonna sit here and eat my crow.
but that live footage might be the worst dubbing EVER.

Definitely faux reality. Not nearly enough beer flying or drunk people stumbling around for a Lucero show.

Ok I just got a chance to watch the San Francisco video…and man they just laid the track straight from RRandSB…every breath every chord.. Glad the guys are getting paid but im stingy with the music I love!! Really not excited about this like I should be.

I’ll support them in pretty much whatever they do. I’m not expecting to like the show that much, but so what? Last Pale Light was better than I’d dared to hope, and the 9 new tracks I’ve heard done live all sound great. If $5 Cover is good, it’ll be a bonus, but I’m mostly just stoked for the new record to come out. I think they’re in the studio this week, too.

$5 cover is Craig Brewer’s baby and he is pushing Memphis music that he digs…So what if its on MTV
