ADULT BOYS THUNDERBAND – ABDUCTED AGAIN

abtb-abducted again

I think I remember the night Adult Boys Thunderband (Michael Claytor and Devon Stuart and Eric Atria) debuted the song “Abducted Again.” “We’re going to be the only country band that sings exclusively about aliens,” Devon claimed. I later asked him if he was challenging Armchair Martian. “They’re more punk,” he defended. Fair enough. So, whether or not you count Armchair Martian as country or count God and The Devil as extraterrestrials, Adult Boys Thunderband preaches a sharp frontier gospel that you oughta hear.

Abducted Again features re-recordings of a few songs from their 2012 debut, some great new originals (especially “She Gets Her Way”), and three well-worked covers. The first cover is “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G.–I’ll leave it up to y’all to decide if this one is a hick-hop cash-grab or if it’s the Adult Boys goofily probing a song from when they were Child Boys. The second is “Her and Cigarettes” by Cheap Girls, for which the country treatment really underscores how powerful the chord changes are in this song. It was always a great Cheap Girls song; hearing it re-imagined here argues well for its eventual place alongside “England Belongs to Me” and “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” at [my fantasy] bonfires. The third is the traditional “Mountain Dew,” a showcase for the band’s chops.

Their originals are every bit as strong, of course–you recognize the songwriters we’re talking about. Get in the good graces of the universe and learn our future intergalactic anthems, the hymns of honkytonk Helios, Extra-terrestrial Listening.
