Remember how I said MTV’s $5 Cover was boring last week? This week, outside of Al Kapone, it was totally forgettable.
I’m not sure why, but for some reason they switched up the format and broke the show up into three distinct chapters, instead of bothering to struggle to make it all feel like a connected story like the last episode. While it was nice to not have to suffer through the shitty plot point to plot point segues, it managed to make the whole show feel even more disjointed. At the end of last week I said I wasn’t sure what the show’s supposed to be about. Or if I liked it. Well, now after 2 weeks I’m not sure if the show even is “about” anything at all, and I’m really leaning towards “no” when it comes to whether I like it or not.
The highlight of this week’s show was Memphis Rapper Al Kapone’s segment. Honestly, it’s been the best segment of the entire series.
I’m really not sure the series is gonna get any better for me. With its confusing structure and lack of any real point, it just gets more trying each week. That said, the show has now introduced me to Al Kapone, so maybe that was the point.

as weird and uncomfortable as the show is the mini docs on $5 Cover Amplified are great. Check those out.

Damn. You’re right.
Next week I think I’ll just suggest people skip the show and just watch that site.

The show needs to be about Muck Sticky and the hot chick who takes off her clothes…Claire??
And they need to hurry up and get Lucero on there before I throw in the towell.

it was made to be small webisodes and then MTV picked it up to put on the air. they should have kept the segments small webisodes.
half of memphis thinks the show is ridiculous and the other half think the show is really good. i think it’s in between. it should have a better plot for sure, and then people might gather around the music.

I think they should’ve just shown the webisodes inbetween commercials of other shows just to get it out there to the MTV audience and then heavily promote the 5dollarcoveramplified.com site.
The format wasn’t meant to be an actual 30 minute show, it was meant to be mini-episodes on the website.
Two Way Radio isn’t my cup of tea either and I’m still pissed he featured Al Kapone and not Yo Gotti, I’m betting Cory Branan and Roy would agree. Yo Gotti has way more credibility with the Memphis audience.
If was a show about any other city, I wouldn’t watch. I just love that my city is getting some of that spotlight back.
I’m dreading all of my friends suddenly having Lucero songs on their myshrine pages and saying how they love ‘em and love Memphis music, when I’ve been trying to get them to listen to Lucero and get into the music scene for the past 6 years. I’ll grudgingly welcome them into the club of awesomeness, if I must.

*If it was a show
Fuck, when will we be able to edit our comments?

I think that’s the point I’m getting to with it.

even in webisode format the story parts of the show would be getting on my nerves. The exposure for these bands is great. I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t cut in actual live footage with the mini documentaries and tell their real stories. These artists all have interesting stories on their own without some manufactured drama. ugh

I agree 100% Nick.
That’s definitely the appeal of the minidocs on 5 Dollar Amplified.

Shit, now I’m gonna have hipsters breathing down my neck. Thanks a lot 5 dollar cover blogger dude, haha! Oh, man, I really should watch what I say, but I won’t.
What I’ve said is totally gonna be taken out of context….
Autopsy, I blame you.

Hey! We’re a Memphis blog now?
On
Well, this means that you have to be drunk more often and go through bad neighborhoods blasting Boys2Men.
Are there any bad neighborhoods in St.Pete?
On
I don’t think it’s possible to be drunk more often and still hold a job.
as for bad neighborhoods in st. pete….unfortunately, yes.

Memphis is worse, way worse. We’re ranked the second most dangerous city in the U.S., right after Detroit. You don’t see it when you’re just here as a tourist, but living here we all know and it’s not at all shocking to hear about someone being shot or robbed or something like that. It’s pretty sad. 201 Poplar is just a revolving door for the criminals in this city.
