Remember when I mentioned that Lucero was doing a fan commissioned video for every track on 1372 Overton Park? Well, I wasn’t kidding and this week they’ve released the video for Johnny Davis.

When I was a teenager the Violent Femmes had me wrapped around their proverbial finger. There were times that I thought they were the only people in the world who “got me”. They understood how complicated and complex life as a teenager was, they had all the answers and their lyrics were not only answers, but inspirations. As I’ve aged I’ve often (and quite seriously) said that if I were to ever have a child I’d give them the entire Violent Femmes discography on their 15th birthday. So, when Craig over at songs:illinois posted that Gordon Gano had a new solo album coming out I was rather excited.

Now, having listened to Gordon’s new project for a month or so I can say that it doesn’t really have the charm of the Femmes, but it certainly possesses a maturity that was generally missing from Gordon’s past. It probably wouldn’t be a part of my mythical 15 year old’s birthday collection, but I would recommend it to anyone who, like me, grew up with the Femmes.

Two Cow Garage – “American Static” from TCSG on Vimeo.

If you can watch the video above and not be blown away then I’m pretty sure we can’t be friends.

It’s a new track from Two Cow Garage being sung by frontman, Micah Schnabel and shot by thunderclapsupergenius. I’m not quite sure who thunderclapsupergenius actaully is but they’ve been pumping out some stellar videos as of late. They should send this one to Fuse as is.

Tim Barry – “Prosser’s Gabriel” from TCSG on Vimeo.

This is a new song Tim played at the Suburban Home garage sale while I was up in Denver that really stuck with me. When I saw the quality of this recording of it knew I wanted to share it. It is based on the story of the slave blacksmith, Gabriel Prosser, who led a large slave rebellion in the Richmond, Virginia area in the summer of 1800. You can read about on wikipedia.

Honestly, this probably wasn’t what the band envisioned when they booked a small tour through the Southeast in support of their new album, For Dear Life, but the road can be a cruel mistress and she decided to slap the band around pretty hard this time out. Larry, the drummer, fell head-first into a campfire, resulting in a couple of nights in a Georgia burn unit (for his hand, not his head). Then Bob, the bassist, somehow managed to break a rib. Caleb and Pete managed to make it back to Florida in one piece but Saturday night’s show ar New World was just Pete solo, thus turning the rock show into a singer/songwriter show.

The few people who stuck around to see the show were treated to sights of me pretty much wasted and of a very apologetic Pete playing tracks from the new album, as well as songs from his solo acoustic album. Hopefully the band will get mended up and come back to Tampa with the full rock show and celebrate the new cd properly: LOUD.

You can buy a digital copy of the album on a “pay what you want” basis on their website.
