NINEBULLETS.NET APRIL PODCAST

Okay, last month we stumbled, both technically and performance wise, through the debut podcast. Now come month two we’re pretty much about to drop the cream of Americana podcasts (from one of the best Americana blogs) on you, and our tech is prepped for the amount of awesome that you’re likely to find yourself listening to multiple times a week. I know I’m coming off like the Kanye West of the Americana blogging community, but I don’t give a fuck. I like fish sticks and (having listened to this thing 10 times since I made it) I’m telling you, you’re gonna love it and you’re gonna listen to it numerous times. I feel that confident.

Some of the improvements this month are a new microphone (thanks to Trevor’s suggestion) so there’s no more overwhelming hiss and instead of shuffling (and struggling) through 3 different programs for the podcast, I found a one-stop shop program in Mixcraft that’s programmed in the same manner as I work. These changes have given the whole effort a much more professional feel, and added to that is the fact that I am starting to embrace the drunken talking to yourself in the middle of the night reality of podcasting. That said, I worry this may be the crest. I fear this may be the best 9b podcast ever and it’s all downhill from here. Yes, I am that confident in the material in the hour that’s posted under this text. That said, I am gonna bust my ass to match it in May.

M FOR MISSISSIPPI OST

Admittedly, we spend a lot of time on ninebullets talking about Deep Blues, punk blues and all the kinds of blues that the kids are doing these days, while giving very little time to the people that inspired all those kids in the punk rock bands to put a slide on their middle finger and change their musical course.  Today I’d like to change that, even if it is for only a day.

M For Mississippi is the creation of Roger Stolle of Cathead Delta Blues and Folk Art and Music Store in Clarksdale and Jeff Konkel of Broke and Hungry Records of St Louis, both of whom fashion themselves as Mississippi blues preservationists. Much like Kenny Wayne Shepherd did in 10 Days Out, they loaded up a van and spent a week traveling around the Mississippi Delta hitting juke joints, front yards, house parties and cotton fields with audio and video recording equipment trying to capture the “real” blues sound. Along the way they met up and recorded with the likes of “T-Model” Ford, Robert “Bilbo” Walker and a preacher who can’t use his real name (cause the blues is still considered the devil’s music), so he goes by The Mississippi Marvel.

The result is an excellent collection of material that’s inspiring the movements we hear nowadays but that we rarely hear in its original form anymore. Check it out and if you like it give the movie a try.

Man, it’s been a while since we had a To Do and, I ain’t gonna lie, the break has been nice. Having done one to two shows a week for a month plus, I was ready for some time off.  Now having had said time off, I need to go to a fucking show. Lucky for me and the rest of you Tampa/St. Pete-ians, we got a weekend loaded with the awesome. So let’s go through it:

Thursday @ New World: The Woodsboss

There is no shortage of people who’ve danced a shit-ton of nights away @ New World to the live blessings of The Weary Boys. Those were the kinds of nights that stories are made of. A band without a label relentlessly touring enough to build huge followings, in enough towns they could play packed houses in every state of the union. Then reality came crawling and The Weary Boys disbanded.

Wha? Why? What’s gonna? WTFingF?
Shock, rage, sadness.
Enter The Woodsboss. Which, fyi, is basically The Weary Boys minus Darren and add Brian’s wife.

So, all you Weary Boy fans needs to get your asses up off the couch and get out to New World Thursday night and we’ll dance again to the fine fine sounds of Mario, The Woodsboss and a few Weary Boys faves.

Friday @ The Garage: Tailgunner Joe, Nervous Turkey and Those Legendary Shackshakers

Tampa/St. Pete is in an interesting time because we have an utterly ridiculous level of awesomeness in our local scene, and two of the upper crest of that scene are coming together to open for the the stupidly awesome Legendary Shackshakers.

Really, Tampa. I know you’re lazy. Fuck, I get it. We live in Florida. People who don’t live here don’t get it, but I know that the notion of a “local” band in this state is like screaming “Oral herpes at the kissing booth! Three dollars”, so let me tell you something right now: Tailgunner Joe and Nervous Turkey are each worthy of a night out on their own. Put them together and it almost becomes necessary for you fuckers (that was a ‘you fuckers’ that includes me) need to come out. Now, WTF? You include them both with Those Legendary Shackshakers and I can not think of any reason what you can’t spend 12 dollars to see guaranteed awesome from beginning to end.

For those that don’t know, let’s talk Legendary Shackshakers live for a moment.

It’s Those Leg-en-dary muthafucking Shack Shakers. Does anything more really need to be said? Those who know, know. Those who don’t…well, what the fuck is wrong with you? Get your ass to The Garage and see what Jello Biafra called rock and roll’s best frontman, Col. J.D. Wilkes. Snot rockets will be launched, pubes will be thrown, beers will be drank and howdies will get doodied. You may hate the music but you’ll love the show, I guarantee it. It’s Iggy Pop fronting Southern Culture on the Skids. The southern gothic, rock and roll version of the Sex Pistols, but more entertaining and with more talent.

Ninebullets.net gets a lot of mail. Mostly cd packing envelopes and what not but occasionally other things arrive…some are neat, some are silly but none have ever been quite this awesome:

Yup. Yesterday I got a ninebullets.net hat from a reader. It’s all stitched on and I think it’s pretty rad. You local folks will be seeing a lot of it.

I thought this would be a good chance for me to mention how much we appreciate all you readers. Over the years it seems like we’ve been building a neat community here @ 9b and in the next incarnation of ninebullets.net we’re gonna try and nurture that a little more with things like personal icons and a 9b forum.
