Things Look Different When The Sun Goes Down is singer/songwriter Kate Mann’s third album. I’d never heard of her and, to be honest, I wasn’t really expecting to like her for some unknown reason. Well by the end of the second track, “Robert Johnson Knew”, I was adding her name to my list of people I need to write about.

To fully appreciate Kate’s music you need to know a little of her background. She’s from New Mexico but now makes her home in Portland, Oregon. In 2005 Kate had an awakening, quit her job as a high school teacher, traded her car for a van and hit the road touring the Western United States. That gypsy nature permeates her music which mainly focuses on her soulful, musky voice and acoustic guitar, while cellos, fiddles, harmonicas, and accordions fill in some of the space in the rear. The characters in Kate’s songs are tortured, be it by the secrets they keep (“Robert Johnson Knew”), the paranoia that haunts them (“Bird In My House”) or by the things they’ve done (“Drag The River”). There is little room for happiness within the 11 tracks of this album.

While there are some tracks on this album that are not gonna make it onto my iPod, the tracks that I am keeping are more than enough to label this album as Essential Listening.

More sightings were reported over the weekend:

I told you we’d get it all figured out. And we did. The more frequent and attentive visitors to the site might have noticed that last night the sidebar went through a few subtle changes. Thanks to our stellar tech machine Dr. Trevorkian you can now subscribe to all of our RSS feeds, you can see my twitter activity and there is a link to the current podcast.

Without getting very technical (cause I don’t really understand it on that level), the first attempt at the podcast had us hosting everything here on the main site. In doing that the podcast was eating our RSS feed. In other words, disaster…perhaps Trevor can post a more detailed explanation in the comments. Now what we have is a separate, official ninebullets.net podcast site. This will work out pretty nicely I think. The sidebar will link over to the site and all the podcasts will be available over there forever(ish) as opposed to the mere 30 days things are available here on the main site. Each time I post a new podcast I’ll mention it over here in a post and included the embeded player you see below.

I hope y’all enjoy these things.

Also, you’ll notice on the site of the podcasts that there is a paypal donation area in the sidebar. I’m not too keen on begging for money but at the same time, there is nothing about this site that’s free and, if you notice, there are no ads. Granted, the five dollars a month is not gonna break me but it is an added cost. If you feel like it, drop a donation. If not, enjoy the music and buy a shirt or cd from one of the bands I write about.

As a final order of business I would like to thank Blake from the podcast It Burns When I Pee for his donation of a couple of hours today to design a ninebullets.net podcast logo for me. Go check out his podcast and thank him for helping me out.

That’s is. Let’s Podcast. Once again, here is the tracklist for the debut podcast and I’m sorry for getting so drunk by the end of it.

Mar 272009

Last Friday I announced the line-up of bands for this years Deep Blues Festival. Earlier this week I bought my plane tickets for Minneapolis. I tell you that so you don’t think I am just pimping the festival for some nefarious reason. I buy a ticket just like everyone else. That said, I really do believe in DBF, in what Chis is doing and in the bands playing it so I will take every opportunity to pimp it.

Hence Deep Blues Fridays.

On select Fridays between now and the festival I will feature bands playing it, live sets from festivals past and things of that ilk. I hope y’all like it…and if you’re anywhere near Minneapolis, join us in July, it’s gonna be a blast.

This is a sampler the festival recently put out featuring performances from last years show. Chris told me I was free to post it here so here you go. Individual tracks are below from listening, complete sampler can be downloaded here.
