Dreamhost is gonna be moving us to a new server sometime this weekend (hopefully today) which should eliminate most of the problems we’ve been seeing. Right now it’s a 2 drink effort to get a post up so I’m not posting anything more today. Regular posting will commence Monday.

Y’all have a good weekend.

The Deep Dark Woods is Ryan Boldt (guitar), Burke Barlow (guitar), Chris Mason (bass), and Lucas Goetz (drums), with all four sharing songwriting and vocal duties. Winter Hours is their sophomore release on the Black Hen Music label and was recorded and produced in Vancouver at The Factory by Steve Dawson. The album most certainly surpasses the excellent Hang Me, Oh Hang Me, which happened to win the award for Best Roots Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

When I wrote about The Deep Dark Woods’ first album I described it as a Sunday morning cd, but I think I was mistaken. Their sound is a little bigger than that. It’s more of an all-encompassing sound of winter, which is a season any band from Canada is probably very familiar with. It’s the perfect cd for a cold day where everyone is crowded in the kitchen while a pot-roast cooks slowly in a dutch oven. Do you get my drift? It’s a real mood album in the sense that it sets one, not that you need to be in the proper one to listen to it. One night while it was playing I said to my wife, “I love the fact that this album can be so somber and melancholy without being depressing.”

Another thing I like about this album is the fact that it has a timeless sound. What I mean by that is that you can’t listen to it and immediately identify what decade it comes from. Music like that has a tendency to have more staying power than those with “flavor of the month” stylings. Like great food, one needs not attempt to refine a dish when just cooking it perfectly will be good enough.

It’s been a rough week for Dreamhost which has, in turn, made for a rough week for ninebullets.

Today has been especially bad. Apparently Dreamhost is suffering from some sort of DNS issues which is making the site extremely slow and, at times, totally unresponsive. Until they get this fixed I am not gonna try and post anything….it’s just too god damned frustrating.

See y’all tomorrow, heopfully.

From Dreamhost:

Update: We have found the source of the problem. It looks like there is a windows trojan going around that attempted to make contact with a domain that is pointing to our nameservers, but isn’t actually being hosted by us (was likely an old customer that removed it from hosting, but didn’t change the nameservers to point away from us). This caused the flood of traffic to come in and overwhelm our DNS servers. You can find more information about this trojan here:

http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/trojsecondtaa.html

Unfortunately, DNS attacks are nearly impossible to stop if they’re well crafted. In this case, all of the traffic is perfectly legitimate and there’s nothing special about the packets that any protection system could really block. We are in contact with verisign (the registrar of that domain) now to try and stop this domain from pointing to our nameservers and are doing everything we can on our end to resolve this issue.

It was announced that my favorite team, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have cut my favorite player, Derrick Brooks. I mean, I see the logic. DB had taken some steps back over the past 2 seasons but I’m still saddened. Derrick Brooks is the only player whom I’ve been able to cheer for and follow throughout his entire NCAA and NFL career. It’ll be odd to see him in another uniform next year.

I need a fucking whiskey drink.

Okay, I’ll be 100% honest. I’m not nearly as familiar with Malcolm Holcombe as I should be. He’s always been an artist I’ve meant to delve into but for what ever reason have never gotten around to it. However, after reading the following quote from leftofthedial I dunno how I could miss the chance to see him live:

Holcombe played with a scary intensity. I didnt want to take my eyes away for fear that hed sneak up behind me and pull out a knife. His voice sounds a thousand years old (I mean that in a good way), probably the result of decades spent smoking and singing. His acoustic fingerpicking was just as hypnotic as his crazy hobo stare. What stood out about his performance even more than the music was his semi-coherent rambling between songs. He just kind of lapsed into and out of stories – I now know all about his wife, his false teeth, and about the $23.50 he made playing in Georgia, among other things.

I mean, seriously…I think we’re in for something special. Join me will you?

Any other readers out there ever seen Malcolm? How was it?
